Hello - not sure if I'm in the right area, please let me know if I'm not. I've got a modem in my pc and it's IRQ is conflicting with the IRQ on my built in sound, so I have to disable sound to use the modem. I'd like to be able to have both available at the same time.
Thanks.

Need a little more information about your PC. What OS for example.

Using Windows 98 on an IBM 300GL.
They both seem to be using IRQ 10 - don't know if this helps.
I was told I would need some special software to change it?

If the modem is PCI, move it to another slot if you can. I don't think Win98 will let you force an IRQ. Somebody might have something to say about that. What type of Internet connection, phone line, cable, DSL.

The modem is PCI, and I can move it - will this fix it?
It's a standard telephone line, not ISDN.

It's possible. Changing PCI slots might change the IRQ it uses. If you have a cable connection you can use a USB Ethernet adapter. USB doesn' require an IRQ.

Changed the modem to a new PCI slot and it all works.
Thank you Wil.

Hi Wil,
I have another problem here about internal modems. I have a friend with a computer that has an internal modem. Here are the specs:
- Windows 98 OSR2
- Internal modem : SmartLink Modio 2-in-1 (sound card and video card)
- Pentium 3 400MHz CPU
- 64 MB RAM
The problem that we're having here is that, after we installed the card. It has the modem option incorporated in his sound card hardware option, you know, the part you find in the My Computer --Right Click--> Properties --> Devices tab. But when we try to Add Modem, the computer cannot detect the modem. When we force a modem to install in, the virtual port does not seem to work. What do we do now? *Distressed*

Hi Hozy -
I am not Wil - but you might want to check out this link (http://www.modem-help.freeserve.co.uk/help/mi.html).
Also, I don't suppose you installed the sound card using DOS or Windows 3.x drivers. But if you did the card, although working, will not show up in Device Manager.

I'm not clear on what you'r saying about the card. All I can get is that the card is a modem, audio, and video. I really have no experience with phone line modems and their configuration. If they just bought it have them call tech support. There should be a number or website on the package. If not go to www.google.com (http://www.google.com) and search for the company's website for tech support.

Have you treid to use the driver software included with the card?
Also, is you BIOS setup to detect Plug-n-Play devices? This should be left for Windows98 to do if you want to detect and setup new devices properly. Hope this helps.
Erik
Hi people,
Thanks to wiltrot, erik and pianorak for your help. I managed to locate the tech support for that related modem. I guess now my friends will be relieved of his headache. Thanx again.
