After adding my 16x DVD 115 pioneer drive, I've been getting frequent blue screens whenever I try to access the dvd drive. This doesn't occur in a predictable manner...sometimes it works, sometimes not. I have my 27gig WD Expert hdd as primary master, a Mitsumi CR4802 (burner) as secondary master and the dvd as secondary slave. I tried putting both on cable select, but when I booted, the bios would spit out garbage when it tried to detect the IDE drives. The mobo is a MSI6167 bios 1.6 (latest version). I also tried putting each of the cd drives as the primary slave, and having the other cd drive as the secondary master, but none of these worked in windows....what's the deal?...I thought you could pick how to assign them in any fashion, except w/ having a slave w/o a master?........any ideas?

here's the rest of the specs just in case:
128mb PC133 generic
diamond mx300 sound
sdr geforce guillemot
ahtlon 500 @ 700

I need a new hdd, and I wanna get this problem cleared up before adding another...I'm thinking the 80gig maxtor (I know it's slow, but I just want to put backup stuff there)...anybody had problems w/ this hdd?

did you try setting the DVD-ROM to secondary master and the Burner to secondary slave (I couldn't tell if you said that or not)? I'm not sure if that would help but it couldn't hurt (unless you hurt it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif)

yep...tried that...in that case, windows only recognizes the dvd...after more research, I think that some drives are pissy about who they share their channel w/...and that I'm just gonna have to live w/ the crashes...

BSOD's are usually associated with software. Have you installed anything along with the DVD, or soon after it? COuld be drivers too...

BSOD's are tough to troubleshoot...might take some digging.

I am absolutely positive that it is the cd drive.....this isn't a software problem...I only get them when I access the cd drive...

Have you changed any of the settings in the device manager (i.e. DMA, disconnect, sync and so forth)? You might also try using the system information application and checking all of the IRQ's and DMA's to see if there is a conflict between any of the devices. Also did the drive come with a decoder board? If so, is the board inserted into a BUS master slot? One other area to check is the actual listing of devices in the device manager (called system in control panel) and see if you are getting any exlimation marks or X's next to any devices.

ooo......you might be on to something...
okay, IRQ 5 has "IRQ Holder for PCI Steering" and "NVIDIA GeForce 256"
IRQ 10 "AMD-756 PCI to USB Open Host Controller" and "IRQ Holder for PCI Steering"
IRQ 11 has "Vortex AU8830 PCI Audio" and "Vortex AU8830 Multifunction PCI Platform" and "D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter" and "IRQ Holder for PCI Steering"
IRQ 14 has "Primary Bus Master IDE Controller" and "AMD-756 Bus Master IDE Controller v1.24"
IRQ 15 is just like 14 only secondary

what the hell is this PCI Steering crap?.....I hate stupid sound cards, they think they are like 50 devices in one....

About the IDE stuff...the old athlon boards (like mine) need that bus master **** to work...I tried to update it to v1.32 that came out in june, but after I remove 1.24, then try to install 1.32, it says "i'm already installed"...so I reboot, at which time windows immediately finds the device and reinstalls 1.24 before I have anything to say about it...also the installers from amd are just executables, no raw drivers, so i can't just update the driver from the device manager...so I'm just living w/ the 1.24 for now...the fixes in 1.32 don't seem to apply to me anyways....

Thanks for the help so far

weezel please watch the language, ok?

Thanks.

PCI steering, unless I'm badly mistaken, which is certainly possible, allows multiple devices to share an IRQ. The descriptions I've read were a bit confusing, and it's been a while, so I could be entirely wrong...

This Article (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/buses/types/pciInterrupts-c.html) in the PC Guide has better info than I can come up with off the top of my head.
