cd drives wont work

I install windows 98. if i put any music cd into cd rom or mitsumi writer, system hangs. i put in mother board (jetway) driver ide disc. load this disc in and my pc does not crash when i put music cds in. but the cd rom and cd writer wont work, the cd rom says CD: above it and when you click on the cd rom D: icon it looks like it thinks there is a cd in the drive. But nothing comes up just disc full image at left of screen. the E: drive says not ready when i put a cd into it. I put windows 98 into my machine b4 and had this same problem. i found out the problem by accident because i dont know what i did. Any help would be great thanx. i have amd k62 550 voodoo3 pci 2000 SB16 stereo. all drivers have been put in. the cd drive thought it was my c: drive at one point.

Try another CD ROM Drive. Your CD-rom drive may be burnt out.

Both cd rom drives are brand new and from different companies. this problem is driver based i just cannot remember how too fix. the cd rom D thinks there is a cd in it even though there is not

Check the jumpers on the backs of the drives and make sure you don't have them both jumpered to Master, or both jumpered to slave. If, of course, they're both on the same IDE channel...

Also chack the BIOS, and see what the settings there are, and in Device Manager DMA should be turned off for CD drives.

the cd drive D: has cd(cdfs) beside it. the dma is off on both cd roms. this is a driver problem conflict. when i put my ide patch in for mother board it said it might clash with windows and it has. but b4 i pit the ide patch in the pc crashed when i put a disc in. cd rom D: has cd in the properties label while e: cd writer has no label and harddrive c: is labelled aswell. please advise
