hey, while reworking a machine, after doing a clean install of win98se I have the following problem:

When machine boots up, windows keeps finding and looking to install "PNP sound chip".

keeping in mind that everything works as it is supposed to, there are no conflicts in Device Manager, and the machine works great.. except I cannot get it to stop looking for this PNP sound chip upon boot.

I have looked on the MB but cannot find any jumpers for PNP there.

Intel SE 440BX-2 MB.

now I have disabled PNP in BIOS.

wish I could find and disable this thing.

doing so in Device manager under system devices stops windows from looking for it, but creates other problems.

edit: did I mention that I have and have used the MB cd??

help, .

Hey Sea,

Sounds to me like it's trying to load onboard sound. Look in BIOS for options to disable the onboard sound. It might be in two different sub-categories, one says onboard sound and another one may say something about Soundblaster emulation. Disable them both.

Next, boot up, go to Device Manager and look under Sound, Video.... Look for anything that's related to the onboard sound. Choose properties and check the box beside "Disable in this hardware profile". Reboot. You may have to do this a couple of times, before Windas realizes it should ignore anything with the onboard sound chip.

"Course, I may be out in left field on this one, but that's what PNP sound chip sounds like to me. If you don't have onboard sound on that motherboard, well then by golly, I'm stumped.

Cheers,

BB 66

Or, maybe you can find some info here:

OR, it could be that you have installed the audio drivers from the motherboard CD, but in fact, that particular motherboard didn't come with the onboard audio option?

Good luck.

I have disabled it under system devices in Device Man.

so far it's ok, but now it won't shut down, will only reboot!

and yes, I have been through all the settings that I can think of.

hmmmmmmmmmmm always something.

edit: strange server error, or I didn't somehow see the above last part of your post.

It is true that I installed the drivers from the MB cd.

I think I need to uninstall some.
