I'm going to try and use Partition Magic 6.0 to set-up a dual boot on my hard drive. I would like to use half of my hard drive for Win98 and the other for WinXP. Should I use "Primary" or "Logical" for my partitions? I would like to keep 98 on drive "C" and XP on drive "D".
Thanks,

Use primary partition for both c and d drives. A logical drive does not have a boot sector, so it would be useless for a operating system. Logical drives are just good for storing data.
Cya hope this sorts it out.

You will need to create a primary DOS partition (50% of total drive space) which will create C: drive automatically. Create an extended DOS partition than create a logical drive in the extended DOS partition this will be D: drive. Be sure to set C: drive active. You can only have one drive in a primary DOS partition and You can only have one primary DOS partition per physical drive. Also there can only be one active partition in the whole system recognized by DOS. To multi-boot, the second operating system does not need to be installed on a primary DOS partition. Here is Microsoft's instructions for Fdisk and Format (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q255867) if you have any further questions post back. My set up is as follows

1st HDD Primary DOS partition (50%) extended DOS partition (50%)
C: primary DOS partition (set active) Windows ME installed
D: Logical drive in the extended DOS partition (saved downloads)

2nd HDD 100% extended DOS partition
E: Logical drive in the extended DOS partition Windows XP Pro installed
F: Logical drive in the extended DOS partition (Images of C:, D:, and E: using PowerQuest Drive Image)
If you create a primary partition (C: drive automatically) (50%) on your drive and set it active and install Windows 98. When you install Windows XP it will create drive D: for you. By the way did you follow the links that I posted to your other thread last night. They might be of help in this thread too.

May I ask how big is your hard drive.
Edit: I found it in another thread 80GB

Actually you can have 4 primary partitions (and they can all be on the same drive), and the partitions don't have to be 50% of the drive (any percentage will do). Fdisk will only let you create 1 primary per drive, but PM will let you do more.

I would be more inclined to make the partition for 98 in the 10-15GB range, and then let XP have the rest.

Thanks for all the responses and the links. I just found out that Partition Magic 6.0 doesn't support XP so I would have to upgrade to PM 7.0. I don't really want to use Fdisk because that would mean I would have to Reformat again. And I've have two answer's saying that "I would" have to use large disk support and another saying "don't" use large disk support because of the FAT32 and NTFS issue. It seems to be gettig a little confusing. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
Again thanks for the responses,
Jenn..

PS: My hard drive is 80GB and I already have Win98 loaded on my hard drive.

You can still use PM6-just use it to resize your W98 partition to around 10 Gigs, then create an extended partiton w/a logical drive for the rest.

Now you have two partitions; C and D, then just insert the XP CD and tell it to install a new setup on the D: drive. That's all there is to it, then you'll have a dual boot setup.
