http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif I wanted to upgrade my computer from Windows 98-first Edition to Windows 98 SE. The upgrade was going fine until I restarted my computer. I forgot to take out the SE CD. Now my computer for some reason is looking for a bootup disk. The exact error I get is "Boot from Atapi CD-Rom Failure - Disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. I have a ton of stuff on my computer, so I defintely do not want to partition and format the drive again!! When I initially partitioned and formatted my hardrive I used the MAXBLAST disk that came with it. Here are the specifics: 700 mhz Athlon CPU, 20 gig Maxtor harddrive, 12x DVD Drive, 3d Raven video card, 56k modem. My question is: What can I do so that I don't have to partition and format my hard drive all over again? Any ideas or thoughts would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!
Check the MAXBLAST documentation for troubleshooting and recovery steps. It sounds to me like the MAXBLAST boot record or some of its associated software may have gotten corrupted or deleted. It may be an easy fix, but read carefully to avoid losing your data.

You might want to check Maxtor's online troubleshooter at: http://www.maxtor.com/Maxtorhome.htm
Click on Service, then select the troubleshooter. Under Common Symptoms, there is a drop-down box; look for Maxblast Boot Code Corrupt.

Try and copy the system files to the hard drive. Boot to a win98 start up disk, and at the A:\> prompt type:
sys_c: [Enter]
using a space in place of the underscore ( _ ). I use the underscore so the space is more easily visible, since this font doesn't show them well. I like this font, it looks great, but the width of the letters makes spaces hard to see. (No Charles, don't change it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif )
Anyway, they sys command will copy the system files to the hard drive. After you press [Enter] wait a few seconds, and you should see the message System Transferred. Reboot, and you should be able to boot to the hard drive.

Good idea, Paleo Pete. That could do it if the EZ BIOS boot sector is intact. The troubleshooting step I referred to has the EZ BIOS substitute for "fdisk /mbr".
By the way, I had a drive with EZ BIOS and couldn't get the EZ Drive software to uninstall it. Fortunately, an early version of PCcillin thought it was a boot virus and killed it off.

Reid I'll go for that, you may well be right. If it does the same thing as fdisk /mbr, it might do the trick.

I missed something obvious. If the board supports a 700 MHz Athlon, then it must be able to support a 20G drive without having to load EZ BIOS onto the boot sector. The Maxtor web site is still a good troubleshooting source, but I may have gotten you started in the wrong direction. Just look for the symtom that matches yours. Also, I'm sure that Pete's advice will be just as good as what you may find at Maxtor's site.
