There is a freeware known as Proximotron and Webwasher. Look for it in the web. I'm using the Proximotron 'cause I cannot configure the Webwasher, and it is an effective filter, though not 100%. But it does work.

Do you have virus protection and is it updated? You might have a virus on you computer, try scanning it.
Also go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/internet options/
Delete history. And go to settings under general tab and got to view files

Click on edit and select all. Then all the files should be highlighted , then right click and delete them all. That should rid you of them for a while. Cya

Check the Spyware List (http://www.tom-cat.com/spybase/spylist.html) and see if some of the programs on your machine are on it. This list (http://www.suttondesigns.com/EnigmaBrowser/Spyware.html) is good also. This one (http://www.globalnet.cz/spyware/list.html) is a bit old, but may have some shown that the others don't have. The list is probably the most common.

It sounds like something is calling up those ads, and I might be off base with the spyware issue, but it could be a possibility. Cleaning out your web browser history and temporary internet files should help, but only temporarily. Turning cookies off might help some also, I'm not sure without knowing the actual source of the ads.

Have you ever used Juno and still have the software on the machine? Juno is ad city...Also check [Ctrl] [Alt] [Del] ONCE to see what is running in the background, it could be a program calling up these ads. Turn off one thing at a time (End Task after highlighting it) and see if one of them stops the ads. Reboot between each to get everything running again, then turn off a different program. Things like Explorer, Systray, antivirus and Zone Alarm should stay on. Check the Start Up folder and run msconfig to see what you can find in those that may be running and possibly calling in ads.

Move program icons from the Start Up folder to a temporary location for troubleshooting purposes, they can be put back easily. Uncheck programs listed in the Start Up tab of the msconfig screen, they can also be re-checked later.

You did say you run AdAware?

That should have caught all of Gator, but I would do a registry search, just incase there is something there...

Also what are these, your typical pop-up ads?

I would try cycling the connection to pick up a new address and see if that helps, also make sure to shut down your browser (but not ZA) when down for the night.

What are they for...anything like MSN maybe? Passport? anything MS related?

Have you disabled MS messenger/ MSN install/links in XP?

Anything other than your connection and ZA left running?

I think it would be a good idea to activate ZoneAlarm's Lock when the computer is not being used.

Following a recent update AdAware came up yesterday with this beauty in my Registry: MS spyware.awb - 496 bytes.
Unsurprisingly Google didn't come up with anything.
I have parked it in "Backup", but should I perhaps delete it?

Following on from my previous message I've just had this message against a magnificent blue background!

MS Registry Checker -
Windows found an error in your system files and restored a recent backup of the files to fix the problem. Press Enter to restart your computer.

Now, am I being paranoid or just plain ignorant: but could there be a connection with the MS spyware found in my Registry mentioned above?

Thanks, Sea! Just added that link to my Favorites. Was searching Google the other day for an ".ink" extension and had quite a few wrong hits before entering "correct" search parameters.

Pianorak- was it a whole bunch of information on this pretty screen you saw??

I got this once, some of you may remember I was having a few "bugs" to work out with winXP Pro.. especially since I had no clue as to how the OS even worked at all.

after getting this pretty screen with all the information on it.. XP seems to have fixed itself!

no more problems with my connection cutting of after a certain amount of time, and the occasional mini-dumps have ceased as well!

so there is hope!

You must have some application running in the background (this happens to me all the time, when my son keeps kazaa running).

If you're lucky, you can find an app running in the systray and close it; if not you may need to find out what's running from "task list", and disable it (before you go to bed at night... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Good luck !
