I have built a website for my company. However, I am not entirely sure of the next step regarding registering a domain name and hosting. Once I have registered a name, is it necessary to then have someone host it for me? Or is this carried out 'under one roof' so to speak?
One company I researched where advertising web forwarding with full masking and to be honest this is all greek to me!
Can anyone point me in the right direction or recommend a good company for this, bearing in mind that myself and my company are based in the UK.
thanks in advance...
Whether or not you will need someone else to host your page will depend on what your capabilities are. Do you have the ability to host the site yourself? i.e. Do you have an always on internet connection, and a computer that can act as a web server where you will store all of the files needed by the site? If you have the ability to host the site yourself then regestering the domain name with a compnay that offers to redirect traffic will be sufficient. (this just means that when someone is calling your web page, they will send them to your server, and hide its identity)
If you can't host the site yourself look into some of the services that can. I don't know of any in the UK, but in the US I know you have many choices.

Hello DunkUK101,
Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!
Registering your name and hosting are most often viewed as two separate entities. At this point I would suggest researching available domain names in earnest! Finding one that is representative of your company and easy to remember/promote can be frustrating.
I'm sure others here will have some thoughts also...
In the meantime I'll see if I can find the link to the service we used.
Ahh, HERE (http://www.netsol.com/en_US/index.jhtml;jsessionid=L3XOML5OQKLERWFI3EGCFEQ?_re questid=3666790) it is.

Thank you Erik and Whyzman. No I am not able to host the site myself, so i will look into this further, along with other companies to host it for me. thanks for your help. Once again, if anyone can recommend any good UK based companies that do this any help will be gratefully received.

In the meantime you might try a GOOGLE (http://www.google.com) search. Just include the parameter UK....e.g. "Web Hosting UK"
The process usually just entails uploading your website.
BTW...have you used one of the utilities available to verify your html code for errors, etc.?

No I have not used one of the utilities you mentioned, but they sound useful, what would you suggest?

We used a unique situation where the design software and hosting came from the same company. We could test and verify off line before uploading.
Thus, I have not used any of the programs I know are available. THIS (http://www.totalshareware.com/asp/list_view.asp?catid=321) appears to be an excellent resource site.

Usually the way a domain name registration and hosting is handled is first from my experience, register the domain name and get that established. It will take a day or so to become usuable. This process is normal. I would recommend Directnic. Their website is http://www.directnic.com. The price for a normal domain (.com, .org, .net) is $15.00 per year. It's always good to do at least 2 years so you won't have to worry about renewing your domain for a good while.
A few companies for hosting I have used and some of my clients use are Hostway - http://www.hostway.com & Addr http://www.addr.com. Hostway is very good and Addr is good too and cheaper. They have many hosting plans depending on your needs.
Once you get your hosting established, you will need to go to your domain name and change the nameservers so the domain can see the server for your web hosting. Detail instructions are usually given by your host.
If you need some help, feel free to e-mail me.

Hi Dunk,
As Whyzman suggested, do a search on Google (http://www.google.com) and research the results. Most hosting companies here now offer registration services. I would imagine the UK companies would be similar.
You might take a look at Pair Networks (http://www.pair.com), they are the host for our mothership http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif and have some very nice pricing.
I don't think it matters what country you are in, it just depends on what extension you want.
Here (http://www.mayworks.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi) is a link to a Web design forum that is just developing. I think that questions of this nature are somewhat off topic for the PC Guide, even though quite a few can answer them.
Good luck and post us a link when you get it done http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif
