I would say that it is either in need of a very good cleaning or time to replace it...I have encountered several with the problems you describe and most often it turns out to be a broken wire in the mouse cable, most likely at the point it enters the mouse body.

In cordless mice, low battries can cause some of the same problems......

For some reason, gateway PCs seem to get this problem quite often! If you change the mouse over with another one - both mice will work... But put the original one back

(which works on the other C) and it would refuse to work! I would say this has happened about 6 or 7 times (we have a suite of Gateway PCs!)

In answer to the original question, Try a mouse you know works before you purchase a new one! Borrow a friends or one from work! It could also be the port on the back of the system or a similer problem to the one I had!
