Hello Bettyboo and welcome,
Is this something that has just started? Where Modem Properties available before. Check in Device manager to see if your modem is shown there. Have you made any changes to your system (new software, hardware, change configuration)?
I would recommend running a virus scan if you have not done that recently.

Hmmmm,
It seems as though some files have been corrupted or gone missing. With the other strangeness (keys swapping) I would still lean towards a Virus. Do you have the latest update for your A/V? If not, get it and try again.
Not sure if this will work as I don't think it repairs corruptions, but try this- open a DOS window, type scanreg /restore, hit enter and pick a date prior to this happening, hit enter and see what you come up with.
Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

if I may-
it has been more than (4 or 5) days you will not be able to succesfully use scanreg /restore.
try booting to a Command prompt>> option 6, by pressing F8 at startup (before windows loads)
and at the prompt type: scanreg_/fix
with the _ representing a sp_ace.
reboot and see if that helps.

hi again,
if: scanreg.exe/fix is what you typed in at the prompt, I have no idea what that may have done.
http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
the command is: scanreg /fix
additionally: the command must be precise, and done in TRUE DOS- not in a DOS box from within windows!
it is different than "scandisk"
much.
I suggest you boot to safe mode (by pressing F5 at boot repeatedly, and then go to device manager and remove all modems, then reboot and let windows find your modem and install it again.
**note**- if you are now using the modem in question and it is working then don't worry about that.
try the same as above regarding your keyboard [remove it](in safe mode)- reboot and then let windows find and reinstall it.

Hey Betty,
being blonde does not mean you are dumb http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif and I'm sorry for not being clearer http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
I second Sea's other recommendations too.
Sea, just some points of interest: http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Scanreg does work from within a DOS box in Windows
Scanreg is an executable so, putting .exe after will still work in DOS
Scanreg will display the last 4 or 5 times you booted succesfuly. If you did not bootup on Sunday, it wont show for that day.

Adding the .exe (or bat, com, etc) extension to a file in DOS is actually the proper way of doing it, the fact that an exe file will execute (or any DOS file for that matter) is a bonus....you can have 2 files scanreg.exe and scanreg.bat in the same directory and if you type it in without the extension it will execute the first one it finds, but with the extension it will execute the exact one you want.

I had never done it that way, and had not even thought of it honestly.
as long as it has the same results.
see the very little bit of DOS commands that I know and use I learned as needed only, and when one thing worked I just stuck with it.
I'm sure there are many things that can be done in different ways and achieve the same results.. we are talking about M$ operating systems right??

scanreg_/restore would probably be the one I would try. The /fix switch tells scanreg to repair the registry, the /restore switch tells it to replace it with a previous copy of the registry created after a recent successful boot. Scanreg saves 4 copies by default, (or is it 5???) That would replace any corrupt entries entirely with known good copies.
In regard to the general issues with scanreg being discussed here, I was not aware that scanreg would run in a DOS window, I suppose mainly since I've never needed to try it.
The DOS function of running executable files without the extensions being necessary was basically a convenience. It saves typing time. Bassman and mjc are correct in this regard, executable files will run both with and without the extension included.
I can't find much on CRTDLL.DLL, but I did find a brief description of what it is.
What are they? CRTDLL means C Run Time Dynamic Link Library, and MSVCRT means Microsoft Visual C Run Time. These files contain common subroutines used by programs created with Microsoft Visual C.
Yep, it's very brief and doesn't give us much of a clue. Most of what I could find related to programming, which I think is a language imported from another planet... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Someone posted above a suggestion to run a virus scan with recent DAT files. I think that is a very good idea, I don't have any solutions, but if I understand this correctly, keyboard keys are displaying the wrong characters, and sudden error messages are appearing at start up along with general flakiness...Run, don't walk, to a good virus scan.
Also a couple of questions. Has the machine been shut down without using the Start\Shut Down routine as usual for a proper shut down? (Power failure, improper shutdown for other reasons.)
Has scandisk reported any errors such as bad clusters? How old is the computer and how much drive space is free for a swap file?
One more thought occurred barely in time to avoid an edit or second post...That sounds like a winmodem, and usually they must be installed by the software/drivers specific to the modem, not by the Windows hardware wizard. In many cases winmodems must also be physically removed before installing software, then replaced afterward. Strange, but it works for some reason...

what he said!
as a matter of fact I recall Pete gettin' on me one time for not giving the instructions to do this correctly.
Since then I have always been extra carefull as to how I instructed anyone to do it so as to not cause more problems then we were attempting to fix.
thanks for reminding me Pete!

well, if it is the modem you are using, and it works, leave it alone.
as for the rest, I'm thinking maybe Paul from n of s may come and pull another rabit out of a hat here.

I have a feeling here that there is alot more wrong with this machine than what little you have touched upon...the CD doesn't work, the modem is flaky, error messages...it is all sounding like a corrupt installation or a severly damaged one.
Has this all developed over time or has it happened all of a sudden?

Betty, if this machine came with AOL 4.0, it is an older machine and probably won't take 7.0.
We need to fix the problems you are having before installing anything else http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
I just received an E-mail this morning about new updates for AVG (the anti virus I use). This would indicate that there are some new nasties out right now.
I would recommend you follow thru with some of the tips we have given you, or let us know in detail what you have done.
With the info that Pete found, I am affraid we are dangerously close to a "Format and Reinstall" of operating system. If this machine will work at all, start backing up everything of importance.
