View Full Version : Thumbnails

I've been reading the previous two threads with interest.
This is what I want to do.
I've got my pictures loaded up to my little website. Each one is on a different page. I'm in the early days of this!! At present I send e.mails to whoever, with the link just pasted in. But if I made a thumbnail I could cover the link with this and the lucky(?) recipients would know what they were likely to get when they clicked on the link.
So, two questions. Firstly, how would I go about making a thumbnail or equivalent? I haven't got much in the way photo editing programs, Irfanview and Ulead photoexplorer 6. These can convert files, but I'm not sure what extensions applies to thumbnails.
Secondly, how would I hide the link under the thumbnail? I use Outlook Express.
Thanks,
Pete

in outlook express simply insert the pic and size it to whatever size suits you, then click on the picture after you have the size you like and then click the "link" icon on you oe tool bar, type in the address of where you want people to go when they click on the picture.
be sure you're in Rich Text(html) format.

You could also download some Thumbnail Freeware (http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/)

Thanks Sea and Paul,
Done. Initially (before I posted originally) I couldn't get the hyperlink button to be not greyed out, never tried clicking on the picture! For some reason I thought thumbnails were a particular file type. I've just miniaturised a JPG and it seems fine.
I'll have a look at the thumbnail software.
Thanks again.

You know, this is extraordinary.
I followed Sea's instructions and inserted a link under a created thumbnail perfectly, it was so simple. That was the practice. But now I can't do it at all. Even with the same link and the same thumbnail. HTML is enabled in Outlook Express. Just don't understand why. Perhpas this is why I couldn't do it in the first place. Any more ideas as to why I'm stuck now?

God, isn't it a nightmare!!
I've shut everything off, closed all programs and started completely again trying to get a link under a thumbnail. The problem was that the link doesn't show up until you send the message! Before then, you move the cursor over the thumbnail and it's still a four-headed arrow. But I think it's done now.
Sorry to bother you again,
Pete.

Pete,
Note quite sure what you are attempting to achieve. Is it that you want the Thumb to be similar to a text hotlink?
Such as http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif (http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/Forum10/HTML/000290.html)
UBB of course is different than HTML...I think you want:<a href=http://>Thumb</a>
Or, do you want a mouseover the Thumb with text appearing below?

Hi Whyzman,
Thanks for your reply.
I was attemtping to achieve, and have now done so, the equivalent of what you posted, but in Outlook Express. A link, but instead of just being the link itself, I wanted it to be covered by the thumb. It didn't work until I sent the message to myself, which is what confused me. If this is a text hot link, then that's what I wanted.
You've got me wondering about a mouseover now! Which text appears below a mouseover, the text of the link? In a yellow box? It would be handy, but I don't imagine it can be done in Outlook Express.
Thanks again,
Pete

Pete,
The text that would appear below on Mouseover would be what you want it to say....If you wanted the link to be displayed...you'd just type it into the HTML code where provided to do so.

Whyzman could be right, but I sure don;t know the code to do it.
what you are talking about is called "Alternate Text, this displays a message that you can type in for people to see when they hover their mouse over the linked file.

Hi folks.
1) The thumbnail prog above makes "thumbnails" but you can also save them as jpg It just has a nice way of scaling the originals down and can do a whole batch of them at once.
2) If you want to preview the eMail before sending and avoid the "4-arrows" goto View and enable Source Edit. You should then have 3 tabs at the bottom of the window for Edit (where you were) Source (the HTML code) and Preview (as will be seen)
3) When you insert the pic into the message just type the Alt text into the box for it and choose the layout; top, bottom , left....... This just seems easier than editing the HTML code.
4) Hope everyone is having a nice day and lots of hot coffee!!!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks Sea, Whyzman and Paul,
I've written this post before and it never appeared, so apologies if the first one re-appears!
Everything is really nicely clear now. I never used the insert pic button before, always did it from the menu bar. Missed the alternate text thing. And the Edit info is spot on.
A mite off the topic, but I came across this free HTML assistant while searching around the subject of thumbnails. Seems good to me, but I am very much a novice.

This is a tag on an old post but, I have found the thumbnail program very useful. One thing I THINK is in it is right click on a jpg file in Windows Explorer and you get the option to make a thumbnail. Neat. Now, I don't think this was there before I installed the program, but I'm not sure. Windows ME.

Pete I don't seem to have that direct option - other than Open with... Easy Thumbnails - will have to do a bit of exploring. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
