I brought a headphone set with mic and I am trying to figure out why I can't use one of the slots in the back. I have three slots, #1 slot is for the speakers, #2 slot is for the headphones and #3 slot is for the mic. The #2 slot is what I have trouble with. It doesn't work. So I take out the speakers and put instead the headphones in slot 1. It works now but once in awhile I want to hear my speaker and have to change wires again. It's a little annoying. Could someone shed a little light into this matter? Why isn't my slots working?

cantoo,
Could you give us a little more information on what kind of system you are working on? Is the sound card built in to the motherboard? Or is it a seperate card?
Just guessing at this point, but most three plug sound cards I have use 1 plug for speakers, one plug for mic (a mono input), and the third plug is a line input (for connection to stereo input). Its possible that you are trying to use a port thats an input.
Give me some more details and I will be happy to help further.

Yep - we need a little more info... The symbols next to each socket arn't always clear, so be careful there.
Also, check that nothing is muted in sound control pannel!

Ok, the sound card is Avance 97' Audio and yes I updated the driver. It is integrated on the motherboard. I have a Windows 98 plus Operating System. P4 1.5 ghz. 128 rambus. nividea 64 mb. The slots in the back have a picture of a mic, a headphone, and speakers. All are color coated. But I don't know the colors at the moment. The volume is not muted, I checked it. Any ideas?

Hey Cantoo,
You said the volume is not muted, but are you looking in the control panel, or just at the volume control in the system tray (lower right of screen)?
That would be the main volume.
Double click on the speaker icon, then click "Options", then "Properties."
Scroll thru the list of devices and see if there is a control for "headphones." If so, be sure it has a check mark so it shows in the control panel, then adjust settings as needed.
Hope that helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

If this is an integrated sound card.
Are you looking at the case markings or the Mother board layout?
I have one of these integrated cards and it has
Mic,Lineout (Speaker),and Line in Does Not have phones
Check the layout of the plugs on the mother board documentation
If you find that the 3rd plug is Line in
You can pickup a Y cable and connect both the Phones and speakers to the same plug.
Then just turn the power off to the speaker when you don’t need them

Somthing else to try:
Some sound card drivers will allow you to change the source you record from.
If the option is there (in Volume control, Options, Properties, recording) check that it is set to Mic or Line in and that the colume is turned up.
Have a play with the different recording options if the obvious dont seem to work!
