Can somebody tell me how to install a modem properly, step by step? I tried once and screwed it up. How do you set the jumpers and/or dip switches? What about the IRQ settings? They wanted a Palm Pilot on COM2 and wasn't sure about that one either.
ANy ideas? Thanks
This depends a lot on the Modem type.
The operating system your using.
And the Motherboard you are installing it on.
Including chipset. (Pnp) and or slot.
Give us a little more info and we will be able to help

I believe it was Windows NT 4.0-not plug and play but I am not sure of the motherboard type. The modem had both jumpers-3 pins I believe-and dip switches.
By modem Type
I mean make (USR or Zoom and or what ever) and Model Number.
Also Is it PCI , or ISA ?
Example . USR PCI 56K model 2977

I am not too sure-I think ISA and the make-maybe US Robotics, but again I am not sure. Can you give me a generic installation procedure, i.e. How to set the IRQ's, jumpers, dip switches, etc.? Also how to do it with a Palm Pilot on COM2? Thanks. John
If you have the diagram from the Modem manual setting the address and IRQ is easy.
If you need the manual Just visit the USR site they have them in PDF format.
The easiest way is to find out IF the modem is PNP or old legacy first.
Then check your system for the normal com IRQ and address use.
Com1 IRQ 4 and Addrress 3F8H
Com2 IRQ3 Address 2F8H
These are the settings used most often For NONE Pnp PC based systems
If you check the bios and find these enabled you can disable the on board ports that you are not using and assign the modem to one of these..
For the PnP USR modem follow the install directions in the manual.
It’s an easy install when you follow the correct directions.
One type requires the software to be installed the modem.
As for the Palm Pilot you Someone else will have to help you with that.
If you mean to connect the Palm to the PC using Com2 then Install your Modem on Com1
