I just got a used computer and decided to reformat the hard drive. Format went well but now I can not boot because it keeps saying Invalid system disk. I have been doing my homework and now I need to get into the BIOS except it is password protected and I have no idea what the password would be. Can anyone tell me how to override the password?

If you can determine (or know already) what motherboard you have you can find the manual on line most likely from the manufacturer and in it will be a guide on how to do this. Usually there is a jumper setting for deleting the bios password. You would change the jumper then restart the pc and then shutdown and restore the jumper setting. If you need help identifying the mobo check out www.motherboard.org (http://www.motherboard.org) or find the FCC ID# or BIOS string listed on the start up page (hit pause when it appears) then take that info to Paleo Pete's web site http://www.geocities.com/paleopete/ which will direct you to the appropriate site to help you. If you can't see your startup page due to a splash screen (vendor ad hiding the dos screen) you will have to try to find the FCC ID# on the physical board. There is also a small chance that the BIOS password bypass jumpers may be noted as such on the mobo itself. Good luck.

There are usually 2 jumper points which you have to short using a knife edge or something sharp (at least thats how I did on mine which is a ASUS MOBO). Rule of thumb as soon as you short 2 points count to 3 and then start your computer.
Be careful because the BIOS setting will be defaulted to whtever was the default settings before. So you have redo all of your BIOS settings again. Write down every step so that you can go back in future.

Whoa! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif Have to respond to RM's post...The only jumnpers I am referring to is the set that clears CMOS password and not CMOS settings. I do believe this option is available as a separate entity on some mobo's. Since BreBear can't get into the CMOS settings now...the current settings cannot be recorded for refererence. Just wanted to clarify that I was not advocating the system CMOS be cleared unless it is a final option. More information about what options are available for BreBear will become evident once the Mobo is identified and the manual reviewed. An additional note...try to only use the jumper pins for shorting due to the chance of contacted unintended surfaces on the mobo and frying the board.

You could try this. While the PC is off, press and hold down the Insert Key. Apply power to the system and then release the Insert Key about 5 or 10 seconds after power has been applied. This should clear the BIOS, but on some system's it dosen't work. If it dosen't work, you may try holding it down longer. Again, this may or may not work. Hope this helps.

I'll agree with bassvax on the jumper issue. Never use any sharp object inside the case. Use a blunt screwdriver or the end of a pair of tweezers if you don't have an actual jumper to use.

If you had everything...Where would you put it?
