The problem is ,when I set up to defrag the system(hp Pivilion model 6355)the reading at the bottom of the screen says,8% defraged and then suddenly the screen goes blank and starts to defrag over ,then it gets to 8% and starts the samething over again. This problem has continued all night long , when once I left my computer on to defrag. Please give me a solution to my pollution. Thanks from south Alabama.

This was just recently discussed in one of the other forums. Hope this helps.

You may have a program running in the background that is disturbing defrag. Ensure all background apps are closed from the task bar and also, using Ctrl+Alt+Del, you should close all apps except Explorer and Systray. Ensure that the screensaver is disabled also, then run defrag. Hope this helps.

I, too, am experiencing a problem defragmenting the hard drive of my pc. When I attempt to run the defrag, my system runs to about 75%, then recycles over and over and over again, until eventually, it crashes, the screen goes black, etc. I conduct routine maintenance with either the system tools (Windows 98, 2d edition) or Norton Utilities 2000. The Norton scan reports no errors on the system or finds and fixes errors, but keeps telling me that the hard drive needs to be defragged. Norton Anti-virus 2000, updated bi-weekly, reports no viruses found. Moreover, I have begun to experience more and more frequent freeze-ups, crashes and fatal exception faults, which indicates to me that there is an operating error somewhere in the system, despite the clean bill of health from Norton. My manufacturer was a big help ... they told me I needed to install more operating memory! HELP!
