I recently started having random problems with one of my computers. Windows 98SE would crash often and would go on standby even though i told it not to. And when i disabled standby in the bios, windows had even more problems. So i decided...ok fine be that way...so i reformatted and reinstalled. All is smooth until the computer starts to "update system configuration" at the end of the install (around 5mins left it says) and then BAM a BSD stating some page fault. And when i restart, i get into windows and am plagued with registry errors up the wazoo. Nothing will work! I tried installing winME instead of 98...same problem. I even went as far as trying a different hard drive! Same problem!!! I dont know where to go from here. Its a 5 year old Gateway 2000 p5-133 computer...
Pentium MMX 200mhz overdrive (replaced the OEM 133mhz)
128mb 72pin simm ram
1.5gb hdd (WDC AC31600) (swapped out with a 1gb WDC AC1000)
4.0gb hdd (WDC AC34000)
Creative Infra 12x cdrom
AWE64
Lan Card
PCI ATI mach64 based video card

This computer worked just fine until only recently. I just cant figure it out!

Does it have to be on for a while before having the symptoms? Have you checked for over-heating?

I saw a similar problem that was corrected by removing the memory and cleaning the contacts of it with a pencil eraser. Use static precautions when handling the SIMM.

Have you checked the motherboard manual to be sure the board supports MMX technology? THat sounds exactly like what happened with one I had to deal with a while back, that had a 233MMX in a board that supported only 133MHz, and NO MMX...just curious...

Otherwise, I'd say you have a motherboard or CMOS chip issue, unless it's related to heat, as Reid suggested.

If you had everything...Where would you put it?
