Scandisk - prob

I have tried running scandisc numerous times today, I keep encountering the same problem 'scandisc can't continue too many running programs.
I went to 'PC Pitstop', tested my machine and got a list of my running programs.
Could you please tell me which ones I can permanently close at start up and how to do it.
It cannot be done thru msconfig as it doesn't list these programs.

You can shut down everything except systray and explorer. You can ctrl+alt+del and shut em down individually before you scandisk, or download a little program called startup control panel by Mike Lin.

It puts a Startup icon in your control panel and lets you uncheck things you don't want to run on startup...

I have found that scan disk and defrag works best in safe mode.

Thanks hiredgoonz, i have done it with the three keys, spot on or what? it worked like a dream. I like the sound of that Mike lin programe (Start up Control Panel) could you possibly post me the Web address were i could down load it from. Thanks a lot ZAK
