I have a few cassette tapes that I need to get the audio from to get it in a pc audio format (wav or mp3). How do I go about making this happen? What software and hardware do I need?

You need a cassette deck with an audio output, a sound card with a line-in input, a cable to connect them together, and a recording program like music match jukebox.

The cable you need is probably a phono-plugs (from the cassette player) to stereo mini-plug (sound card input) adapter. Music match jukebox is free and works just fine for this.

Diz,
The Music match that is free won't allow a line in recording. You can purchase the MM Plus for $19.95 but be careful because they try to stick you with a radio program in the same purchase. I just went through this myself and it took me almost a month of constant e-mails to get it resolved. I finally got my point across when they mailed me a notice that they were going to charge my card another fee so I told them I was keeping a log of all correspondences and if they did take another nickel they would be going to court. I soon received an apologetic letter and have not been bothered since.

If you're willing to spend near $100 get the Easy CD Creator #5 which won't have the shove it down your throat approach as these others do. It can do as good or better anyway.

Don't get 2 products when 1 will do. If you've got line in capabilities from one software you can record from any audio device you choose with the right patch cords.

Thanks for the advice. I have Easy CD. I'll play with that a bit and see if I can get it to work. I still need to purchase the jack. What is the name for the jack?

that's odd, as i've used the free version of music match with absolutely no problem recording my old cassettes to mp3's, not once did i run into any restrictions with the line-in.

Matter of fact, i liked it so much i bought it, and i simply didn't install the radio component.

No other program out there that i've run across ( like Winamp, RIO port, etc.. ) offers the quality or ease of use that MM does-certainly not at it's very reasonable price.

If you've got a sound card with line/mic in/out, it's either called 1/16" stereo plug on the pc end to rca cable on the source end ie. cassette player. Some call the pc end 'mini's' or the same as the small headphone jacks as found on airlines or like the ones needed for walkmans. Mine is actually in 3 steps: rca to rca, to an adapter to go from rca to 1/4" phono, to another that goes from 1/4" phono to 1/16" phono (or mini plug). You can buy it all one piece though. ASAMOF I have a one piece but it's being used elswhere.

I didn't say don't use Music Match just don't make the same mistake I did. ASAMOF try the free one. See if you can do it as iisbob said. The EZ CD Creator HAS to be version #5 to have the right features but it's $100, so try other options first.

I had to vent my experience with 'them' sorry. Bob, It wasn't a matter of install or not. They suckered me in.

if u do not wanna spend a buck and r not so concerned abt the quality of music, try this simple method :-

>> hold yor "mic" against yor tape-speakers at some distance though and keep the bass settings low, if any..
>> start sound recorder in windows and record in .wav format.
>> convert .wav to .mp3 using any freeware software.

simple, aint it ?

Yes, the quality will be very low.....

There are several free apps around that offer line-in recording, I use db Poweramp Music Converter (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/). It is not as "pretty" or full featured as some of the pay apps but it works quite well and accepts codec pluggins for more than just wav and mp3 conversions

Here (http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/) is a site for all things musical....
