Modem settings

I have an external US Robotics Sportster 33.6 Faxmodem. I want to be able to send out files. Does anyone know the correct settings for the dip switches? The reason I ask is that when I go under start, programs, accessories, communications, phone dialer and try to dial a phone number it comes back with an error.

What is the modem connected to (COM1)?
