I was wondering how the frequency of updates compared for different av progs.

I used to use McAfee until it started to cause probs with some progs.

I am now using PCcillon (for a while) but the last update was last december. (checked site last night)

I know a lot of you are using AVG (I have just d/l it) so how many updates have you had this year.?

I go for the AVG updates once a month. Not certain "why", but AVG started emailing me about the updates in the last two months..they did release two updates in February. I have my update thing set to manual, though, not automatic. AVG gives me no grief..and I like that..but I have never gotten a virus either, so consequently not totally sure it is working.

have just installed AVG. must say I am most impressed. & I've tried several. I have it set on auto update every 7 days, does it leave the screen up so that you know that it has been updated ?

I've always used Nortons anti-virus, and never been infected with a virus nortons hasn't picked up..as far as im aware!

updates are usually weekly, but this depends.!

Vic970,
I've used PC-cillin for a little while now and I get at least a couple updates every month. I have it set for automatic update.
Edit: Infact, I got one last night.

I would say that for me while Innoculate looked nice it didn't do anything at all towards protecting me from anything, running online scans as a backup I found several unfound viri and trojans.

I also use The Cleaner (http://www.moosoft.com/) for trojan and file security..

never tried pc-cillin, but like AVG a lot.

had Norton - hated it- had mcafee hated it and it didn't work either, free from compaq when I bought the pc.

Howdy

Interesting to here you say that about InoculateIT sea..

Maybe that's why I have never found a virus ( knock on wood ) but then again none of the online scans I have tried found anything either...

maybe I don't go to enough forbidden places http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

well that was the free version (Innoculate), as for norton it does work but there are often so many other things about it that I find to make it not worth the effort, mcafees a joke, at least the version I had.

AVG is pretty cool, hard to believe it's free.

welcome to the forums.

is your pc-cillon the bought version? mine's the freeby, which no longer gets a mention on the site, although it is still 'working' I think maybe the freeby site is a different update location and may not be serviced.

thanks for that reminder borgdrone1of2- I have the reference update app from lavasoft but hadn't used it.

Updated and it found "Gator" that I didn't even know about... probably when I was flipping out over morpheus going down.

by the way- I have the mcafee on restore CD as well, but I just wasn't happy with it.. sounds like with both of them as well as the housecall online that's about the most one could do!

Thanks for the welcome Vic970.
I have the paid version. Before I posted I wondered if you might have had the free version because of not getting updates, so I looked for it, but like you said, it's not mentioned on the site. So I assumed there wasn't one. I really like the paid version, you should try it out. I think there's a 30 day free trial.

Hi Vic,

If the last time your anti virus program was updated was Dec. of 2001, I have to think you're way out of date! I've been using Norton for years and have updated weekly. It always adds new definitions to the list. It would seem that you're vulnerable to any of the viruses created in the last three months. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif It's probably not critical, though. Unless you're having problems, every few months might be plenty. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

my pcCillon was the free version which is no longer mentioned anywhere, now there is only a free trial version (30 days) so I think that they are no longer supporting the freeby.
I seem to remember getting an e-mail from PcCillon to try out the new version but it didn't say that support for the freeby was going to cease.

I have AVG now so I'm quite happy with it. I have retained the pcCillon freeby to see what happens and I may d/l the trial version just to try it out.

I'm not a big fan of Norton. Years ago it had a major conflict with AOL and crashed my poor WIN95 system many times. I switched to McAfee and only came back to Norton when it was the only AV at the time that worked with WIN XP. Now I kind of like the weekly updates but still get an occasional error message and freeze up. I think Norton posesses your computer and embeds itself in every nook and cranny. Wait, maybe those are english muffins.....I'm so confused!

I use Ontrack anti-virus (by Trend Micro the makers of PC-cillin) in win XP and Norton in ME between the two of them I get updates 3 or 4 times a week.

My AVG popped up last night for an update (its set for every 7 days) can't say how much I'm impressed with it. I know its early days yet, but its so easy & efficient.
