Hello, I am told that there are ways to speed up Windows loading time during power-on. Ie, the removal of the Windows GUI. Can anyone explain how this can be achieved.

Regards,

Graham.

Without a Windows GUI, there is no Windows. Maybe you mean "removal" of the Windows shell, which is explorer.exe? It can be replaced (by, among other things, progman.exe, which is the old program manager from Windows before Win95). In the boot section of c:\system.ini, replace shell=explorer.exe with shell=progman.exe. Understand that Windows will be very different when you reboot...

Maybe I am mistaken. I thought it was possible to remove the Windows Logo to speed up the start up process.

The windows logo and the Windows GUI are NOT the same thing, there are not really that many speed gains by disabling the logo, though. What major benefit that is gained by disabling the logo is that you can see all the the messages that appear on the screen during boot up and maybe gain a second or two on boot times.

The GUI is the Graphical User Interface, which is what makes Windows what it is....and not DOS.

What OS are you running?

Hello again. Thanks for the clarification. I am running Windows 98.

1. Change the attributes for C:\MSDOS.SYS so it is not "Read Only."

2. Open the file using Notepad or another text editor (not Microsoft Word or any word processor).

3. Find the value "Logo=1" and change it to "Logo=0"

4. Save the file and, to be safe, return it to "Read Only."

5. Change will take effect next boot.

Or

Install TweakUI (http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp). Highly recommended. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
