Purchased a new hard drive for my Dell Tower...want to install XP on it...how do I get it to recognize the cd/dvdrom drive??? I have set it up to boot up from the cdrom, but it doesn't....
Some more details about your system would be helpful...
What is your current configuration?
Is your BIOS setup to boot from the CD and the Cd is not being found?
How did you connect the new drive, where is it connected and are the jumpers set for the way it is connected (ie: if it is the only drive on the primary IDE channel is it jumpered to be the Master and connected to the end of the cable)?

There is only one hard drive and it is nonnected at the end of the cable.
The CD/DVD Rom is also connected at the end of its cable and jumper is on the master.
The jumper was on the cable select for the hard drive and when rebooted, i was getting a message "non-system disk or disk error...replace and press any key when ready"....(there is no floopy in the floopy drive)
When I set the jumper on the hard drive to Master, I got the following message:
"3Com Pxe version.99j.03......
PXE-E61:media test failure..check cable
PXE-M0F:exiting PXE"
press F1 to reboot F2 for set-up"
In all these cases, the bios was set to boot from the cd-rom...
Any help is appreciated...thanks for the quick response http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Hmm.....looks like there is a whole new can of worms here.
Does this machine have an onboard network card? Is it connected and in use?
Has this machine ever been networked?
Do you still have the old hard drive? What happens when you reconnect it?

I just removed the network card, but I still get the same error message:
"3Com Pxe version.99j.03......
PXE-E61:media test failure..check cable
PXE-M0F:exiting PXE"
press F1 to reboot F2 for set-up"

Ok, it is looking for some networking files, even before it is looking for an OS, so are there any options in BIOS dealling with networking, like WOL (wake on LAN)?

Cool...
Just selected 'OFF' in the Bios for NIC...
Now the message referring to the network card is not there...instead, the error message now reads 'no boot device available', although I have selected to try to start from the CDrom first in the Bios....

So now that I've managed to get the hard drive recognized, what next???
When I start the computer it tell me that there is no operating system available???
I can get to an a: and c: prompt...to do I get it to see the CDRom so that I can install XP???
Thanks,
OK...it looks like your machine doesn't support botting from the CD, so try a Win98 bootdisk, select "with CD support", and then put the XP disk in the drive, then switch over to your CD (either d: or e:) and then at the prompt type setup...that should start you on your way....

should I remove the floppy at some point???
When I select to start with cdrom, it says that 'no drives found, aborting installation' and then it installs 'diagnostic tools on drive d:' and then restarts ands says 'device driver not found: 'MSCD001'. no valid cdrom device drivers selected.'
I even changed the cable, tried another cdrom, but to no avail....

I'm not the expert some of these guys are, but I recall having a similar problem. Is your CD set as master on IDE 1? Your hdd should be master on IDE 2. Once the program is installed you need to switch the connections or it will boot from CD all the time. And are you sure the CD drive is receiving power and has the IDE cable firmly attached?

I guess I meant that once you've got windows installed you should make hdd IDE 1 and CD IDE 2....and change order of booting in bios.
Good luck, this is a tough one. But these guys are so good they'll have you up and running in no time.

Hey Rocsell,
kinda curious where you are now. Did you get the OS installed? Did you get it to boot?

I thought i had it, but still not quite there.
I managed to get W98 loaded, but it now doesn't recognize the cdrom...used W98 boot disk to start with cdrom support...i see the cdrom in dos, but the problem is that i cannot execute the setup in dos to install XP nor will it install the drivers for the CDrom in dos as well....what to do, what to do....

Sorry man,
The answer is....there seems to be something wrong with the ide slot on the computer that connects the cdrom...it won't recognize a cdrom if I plug it into the slot (cable is ok)...if I set it up as a slave connected to the ide for my hard drive ( master) then things are o.k. Now I'll try and figure out what's wrong with the ide slot on the computer...CHEERS
