HI Amabone,
The .com and other extensions were originaly to designate what type of site it was; .com=Commercial, .net=part of a network, .org=an organization.
There were no legal requirements or rules to this, so it got to the point where people just used what ever was available.
Now we have more extensions due to the growth of the internet, .biz, .tv, etc...

As for the error message, have you tried a Google (http://www.google.com) search?
