Good link...thanks, ranchdog ! We're new to the whole building process and have these "back orders" already..lol. Friends who have no puters at all, friends who need faster/newer systems for gaming, etc. We can certainly use all the help/advice we can get.

Kelly: You'll need to do a bit of research because what kind of puter you build depends on what you want or need...and on what you can afford. I had seen it recommended here that one should buy a mobo WITHOUT onboard video and sound, so that's what we bought for my new system..but then my husband wanted to go into the gaming (where you really NEED the video card for better graphics), and I had read posts here from some of our regulars who were doing just fine with integrated components so we found an integrated mobo for me and I gave the other mobo to husband. Check out some reviews on brands..there are good brands and "not so good" ones. But part of the whole reason for building your own is so you can customize build for your needs/wants..so difficult for anyone to really choose for you. However, once you have a list of "desired" parts, post them here and ask the guys if your choices "look" good.

A Little Food for thought.
You Build it you have to support it,,

As a guest speaker at a local university IT class, i was once asked by a student what i thought the most important tool a computer professional should have.

Without hesitation, and with a straight face-i said;

A 5 lb hammer!

And i meant every word!!

Add this. Before you start assembly inside the case, cut those perforated holes for case fans into a full opening. These small holes restricts airflow. I have mine cut after I've used my PC for several months and started learning about PC's.

You guys are gonna scare Kelly! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I can't imagine, though, spending that much money for a POS puter..that's awful. We reasoned years ago that it made more sense to buy our puter from a local shop so that we would have local tech support..somewhere to take the puter if necessary. And it was necessary..for some reason (no one's fault probably) the original install just wasn't right. Got error messages and problems until we took it back, and Alex wiped the hard drive, reinstalled 98 and all our drivers we had added (printer, scanner..that sort of thing), and he threw in a Works CD as a bonus..lol. It's been running fine for the two and half years since. We are building our own now..we know a lot more than we did then, and we have this forum to come to if we get too jammed up..but I still think if someone lives in a big city with some "good" shops to choose from, they might consider letting the shop techs deal with some of the headaches of building. Or, I was searching for something and cannot remember where I saw it, but there was a place to buy parts from where they said that for a lousy $20, they would put three "parts" you buy from them together and do the testing and burn in..which after recent difficulties we had with a mobo and chip and heatsink..seems VERY reasonable.

Ranchdog, hehehe. Cheater, I don't see a CPU or RAM on that board http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I had a hangup with an HP desktop laser the other day. After much fiddling and changing paper, it continued to stop printing like it was out of paper. Got fed up with being nice and gave it a good pop square in the nose http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
Scared the heck out of everyone in the studio (my art director actualy screemed) but it started printing like a champ.
I was patted on the back and complemented on my technical prowess, but asked to please never do that again http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Kelly, if your still around, please let us know how you are coming along. Sorry we got off track here http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Unfortunately Mr Sledgehammer Lives very close to The Retail outlet for those PC’s

it’s well known that Every Company out there has had the PC from H@## slip past quality control.
But after 5 trips to the shop and 1 in house repair .. I’d be taking it back also.
And Given the Return policy of these guys.
I’m not surprised by his reaction.. ( Where is the LEMON Law for PC)

Anyone Building their own first system needs to face a simple fact.
You are the support staff for the system once built .
Don’t waste the $$ on cheap low quality components .
Demand the best. You will save yourself a lot of head aches in the future

Just a clarification, in case someone misunderstood. I meant a shop like bassman's, or Sea's, or mjc's or or or. We "browsed" a bit..chatted with some techs..and chose a shop because the tech seemed competent and knowledgeable and just (this was important to me as a female) "nice". (Nice is defined as someone who patiently answers a bunch of newbie "how do I take care of my puter properly?" questions without flinching.) I didn't mean Gateway or somewhere like Office Depot where they have to send your new puter somewhere.

I also didn't mean that the guy's reaction was "awful"..that was understandable. What I meant was that it is hard for me to comprehend spending that amount on money on something that won't work. We don't have that kind of money to "throw away."

Whoa, Yoda ! I will NOT be telling my beloved about your new system!!!
