I've just formatted my harddrive and installed Windows 95. It ran ok, then I installed scanner (Canon)software. The installation was completed ok. I restarted the computer, windows started searching the devices. When it comes to the windows star menu, I tried to use my scanner but cann't. Then I went to control panel and click add new hardware. Windows 95 guided me through the menu, till it said the windows will search a new device, yes(recommed) then click next. I click next then windows starting searching the new device, but the end it said no new device has found. But my scanner still isn't working. NB. during scanner software istallation the source of device doesn't appear as used to be. I am not sure what' happens. Is this to do with BIOS ????... Any idea will appriciate, thanks a lot.

Win95 may have found the scanner on the first boot or during the install.
When it was unable to identify the device it added it to the Unknown device list in your Device Manager.
I would start By booting the system in safe Mode.
Then go into Device manager and remove all unknown devices listed.
While your in device manager .
Check the connection used by your scanner. ( USB, Scsi and or other)
Make sure it is listed and configured properly
Then Uninstall the scanner software while in safe mode.
Then shut down your system. Not Reboot.
Disconnect the scanner and boot the system.
Watch for any new hardware messages..
if found Install the correct device drivers for the hardware found.
To see what is listed as unknown go back and check device manager
Then reference the documentation for your scanner and software.
In a number of units. You must Install the software Before you install the scanner.
If your unit is one of these. Just follow the doc’s step by step.
You may also Find that you will be required to update windows to get some of the devices to work correctly.
Also make sure you have the latest device drivers for the Mother board and device ports (Usb)

Not to clear what you have and havent tried. Two things that come to mind, Have you got a driver disk that came with the scanner, and do you have a Twain disk, that is a small piece of standard software that helps your pc communicate with your scanner.
Also as mentioned win95 doesn't have very good support, so it might be worth the upgrade as 98 has much better support for a broader range of devices.
When running "add hardware", you could try searching manually, rather than letting windows pick it up....by the way this may sound stupid but do you have your scanner switched on when booting up and searching for new hardware?, you should do, and when searching for hardware, click "Have disk" if you have the disk that came with it...
If none of this helps please post in more depth what is actually happening!
Good luck
