Hi folks, again I am plagued by a little annoying problem: A few days ago I tried to remove a small icon from my tray. After clicking it, I didn't understand the options so I intended to click away from the popup so it would go away -- but I mistakenly clicked OK. After that, everytime to start my computer a little box would show on the screen with the statements: "Self Diagnosis" (and right below that) "PC Display Settings Correct?" I then have to Restart; and when the sign-on box comes up I have to close it, and in a minute or 2 the desktop would show up. Anytime after Restart, if I were to do a normal signon with password, it would not work, as the pesky little box would always emerge. I am running windows 98 version 2. Thanks much for any help you can offer.

Hello Island Boy,
Try this. Open a DOS window (start>programs>accessories>DOS prompt), type in scanreg_/restore using a space instead of the underscore shown here.
If you have a date prior to this happening, pick that and follow the rest of the instructions.
This should get you back to the state you were in before this happened.
If not, let us know http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks much Bassman, but that didn't do the trick. Here is what happened: After typing scanreg, etc, in Dos and Entering, I got a note saying,"Cannot restore from windows. Shutdown to DOS and run scanreg.exe/restore. After going to Run and keying in this, I got a note saying: "Cannot find the file scanreg.exe/restore (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available." Your help would be much appreciated. Tks.

OK Island Boy,
Sorry, I made a little booboo there.
Restart your comp. When you start seeing text on the screen or during the time the system logo is on the screen, push and hold F8. If you start hearing a clicking noise, release the F8 button. You will be presented with a menu. Select "Start from command prompt", then try the scanreg /restore.
If you still get the "Cannot find" notice, type in "cd windows" (without the quotes) then try it.
Let us know how it goes http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Hi Bassman, let me send this note which I tried to send a few hours ago. I reached the screen after some effort and typed the scanreg /restore. A note came up saying something to the effect that I now have received (was it 'received' or 'downloaded'?) some error-free files. (I felt glad about this!). But after this a long note came up saying "Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application. The windows registry or system.ini file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try re-installing that application to replace the missing file. C:\windows\system\vmm32\hpzio100vxd. Press any key to continue." [My note: I did not delete any file on purpose] After this, a new small screen came up headed New Auto-Protect, stating : "Unable to initialize the virus scanning engine database files." At the bottom left of this note: [OK]. I bypass this by pressing any key (or was it Enter?). Anytime I start my system or restart, both the long note I mentioned above and the small screen would come up and I would have to bypass them by pressing a key. And the little pesky box we are trying to get rid of always comes back if I try to sign on with my password! Also, the norton virus icon in the tray has a large red X across it -- when I try to enable it , an error msg comes up which prevents me. But be encouraged! With your expertise, I believe you will be able to resolve these issues. Thanks much for all your help.
