Is there any programs that will allow me to use a password with a single file on my computer? If I wanted to start a journal and wanted to keep it private can I assign a password just to it? I am using windows me.

Actually there are a few out there that purport to do so, however i'm afraid i don't have any links with me. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

If you want a cheap alternative-open a DOS prompt, open edit.com-then open your journal, then save it as a file ( ie; journal ) without an extension ( like .txt, .doc, etc.. )-this will leave looking like a random file , and without an associated extension no window's program will open it by default.

Unless another user has some PC knowledge, they'll not know you can still open this in notepad ( or word/wordpad ) to use it. Just make sure that when you save it after making modification's that you don't let any of the window's programs attach an extension to it.

There is a program called PGP it can encrypt and hide files, directories, and even whole drives. It is marketed by Network Associates(McAfee) and included with McAfee Office 2000 Pro utility suite. The program creates a compressed volume file on your hard drive and encrypts it with 128 bit encryption.

For the freeware version of PGP go here (http://www.pgpi.org/). McAfee is dropping support for it...gee I wonder why?

Last time i checked WinZip was shareware; means you have to pay for it-however Enzip (http://www.cpam.freeserve.co.uk) does the same job and is free.

Windows ME has its own compression and encryption utilities that you can use. You can check this out under these headings in Start<>Help.

Basically you would R-click the file and choose send to "Compressed Folder". Then find this folder, R-click on it and choose "Encrypt". You will then be prompted for a password and for password confirmation.
