I am trying to make my computer (compaq 7478) more secure and recently added a password to log on to windows 98 but i found out that if you hit the cancel button on the password screen instead of typing in the password, you can still log on to windows and view all the files and folders. I did find out that the saved usernames and passwords for internet sites, such as this one, will not work unless I log on to windows with a password. How can I make my computer unusable, unless someone knows the correct password? I want to set it up so that someone can't do anything on my computer unless the correct password is entered. Do I need to enter a password in the bios setup?
Thanks

No such thing as making it full proff but yes a Bios password will just about eliminate someone accessing and changing your comp.DO not Forget this password!!
Once your in your Bios select "User Password" you will be prompted to enter a password, Make it a good one. Now you'll want to set your system to ask for that password every time it boots, so select the BIOS FEATURES SETUP option, so select it and change the setting to ALWAYS.Now navigate back to the main menu and select SAVE & EXIT SETUP. Your machine will then reboot and you'll be prompted for the password. Each and every time you boot you'll be asked for password you chose.
This is not full proff by any means but makes it harder for someone.

Other Password "Protection" (in case you get called away and your pc is still running) can be achieved using one on a Screensaver and for when the computer is activated out of Standby Mode.
A lock to prevent opening the pc is another form of protection, making it harder to take out the CMOS battery.

you can use group policy to lock up you computers to some extent, such as deny certain users access to certain programs or the control panel, etc... check it out! you can go to start->run the type poledit.exe and that'll let you edit the group policy of different profiles on your system, click on this link http://www.elkantler.net/security/security.htm for more info. whatever you do, don't deny yourself to poledit.exe in your profile policy because then if you accidently do something that you don't mean you can go back to poledit.exe to change it! good luck

there was something a while back about using a screen saver password, placed in the start menu. from what I remember windows starts and immediayely activates the screensaver and asked for a password. I would imagine you could shortcut this as well, to activate it when leaving your pc.
anyone remember how it was set up ?
