if someone asks me "wat graphics adapter do u have ? " ...wat should i say, VGA, CGA, HGA and all other `GA's` coz these r only the popular video standards that a graphics adapter supports. wat is that actual graphics card or video acc card called ?
when i run msinfo32.exe (m$ sys info) and looked for "adapter type" in components>display ... it shows adapter type as "not available". i know i have an on-board AGP (intel 810) but then wats the adapter type ???

Why, you have an on-board AGP (intel 810) !! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
it's still and AGP card, just intergrated. You either have one of three kinds of graphical interfaces nowadays; AGP, PCI, Intergrated Graphics

The "GA's" are used to represent "classes" of graphics adapters, they're not tied to any one type of graphics adapter (which means they also apply to Macs). Also, they are used to describe 2D-hardware capabilities only. For instance, VGA is the class of graphics adapters that can display a resolution of 640 x 480 (or greater) with a minimum of 256 colors at a 60Hz refresh rate. SVGA can do 800 x 600 (or greater) with a minimum of 256 colors at a 60Hz refresh rate. The other ones you mentioned are either older or more specialized. Notebook and laptop computers use such "GA's" as XGA and SXGA to represent resolutions of 1024 x 768, etc. The only reason this is done with portables, tho, is because portables are smaller and about a year behind desktop technology so manufacturers needed a way to explain the image quality of their smaller LCD screens (especially since portable 3D-hardware acceleration has been horrible until recently).
Nowadays, the "GA's" are pretty outdated and you can assume anything made since the PentiumII era is SVGA or greater. After all, if the "GA's" mean 2D only, and even the lowest of today's onboard graphics is 3D-hardware capable, why use them anymore?
So if anyone asks you what type of graphics adapter you have, "onboard i810" should suffice. Oh and if you ever want to play moderate 3D games you might want to upgrade this!
