This is not a normal part of the boot process. The only time you should be seeing this menu is if you are pressing the F8 key during boot up. Is this an older or newer system that you have? When you do get the menu, do you select #1 (Normal)? Goes your pc give you any other types of trouble? Need a little more information to go on......
When the pc is powered up there is one beep, then the menu and
I select normal, then the windows '98 screen, then the menu again
with addition of some pci info at the bottom, then the desk top.
I never see the memory test that I see on my other pc's.This computer is
about 9 months old. It's a dell dimension, with 500mhz processor
128 megs of ram & 20 gig hard drive, not having any other problems
just want to by-pass or eliminate that menu from normal boot-up
Thanks for your help!!
When you shutdown, do you see "OK to turn off your computer"?

InfiniSource (http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/tune-13.shtml) has instructions to set it up to show the boot menu, you can reverse the process to get rid of it.
Where the BootMenu=1 line is now, change to BootMenu=0 Place a semicolon (; and a space in front of the delay & default lines.
If it's done by Tweak, it's in Control Panel.

Click on Start on the task bar.
select Run
In the Open box type: mscofig
click OK
You should now have the System Configuration Utility window displayed.
Click the Advanced tab
Untick Enable Startup Menu

The only problem with disabling the boot menu, is whenever you may want to get back into it, for troubleshooting purposes or anything of that nature, not even the "F8" key will work.. > not always anyway, there is most likely a reason why that boot menu keeps coming up, seeing as how it is a dell, i can tell you one way of checking everything, would be to run the diags, off of the resource cd, that came with the computer. You will have to get into setup and change your first boot sequence to "Atapi cdrom"
and then boot up to the resource cd, then you will need to cd to the correct drive letter for your cdrom, and then type, "diags32" and then run the "Full Test" Let that test run for a while, and it will tell you if anything has gone ari.

Crypie, please read this!!
I ran the dell diags you suggested,
and there were more than 15 cd-rw tests that
failed,
most were"block 4 Offset xxxx data
was xxx should be xxx (x=various numbers)
Sounds like I need a new cd-rom,
What say ye???
Thanks to all that offered suggestions,
this site is better than some classes I have
taken

Not necessarily. Some CD ROM tests require that a CD be present, or they will fail.
If the CD ROM basically works, I'd say it shouldn't need to be replaced.

Soon as I come up with all the answers...they change the questions!!
