I have two Win2K computers and one cable modem. The PC I'm designating as the host is connected to the cable modem and has a second NIC card where I'm physically linking that and the other computer. I've tried going through the Network and Dial-up connections wizard, but the available connection options do not include the second NIC card, even though device manager says both are installed and there is no conflict. How do I connect the two computers with a second NIC card in the host and a NIC card in the client? I'd like all files on both computers to be available no matter which computer I'm on, and I'd like to be able to access the internet from both computers. Thanks!

Hi, Major_Madness
Are you using a network hub, if not I think you need a CAT 5 crossover cable between the two PCs. I haven't tried this. If you are using a hub you need a CAT 5 patch cable from the second NIC in the host and another one from the NIC in the client. Connect both patch cables to a different port on the hub (not the uplink port). You need to configure the TCP/IP properties for the NIC connected to the Cable MODEM with the IP address, subnet mask, DNS servers, and gateway as provided by your ISP. Check your internet connection on the host. Check the link lights on the client PC, the second NIC in the host, and the hub. Run the network wizard on the host choosing this PC connects directly to the internet and other PCs connect through it. When the wizard asks if you want to make a client settup floppy choose yes. Run the client settup floppy on the client PC choosing this PC connects to the internet through another PC... After you have the PCs configured check the internet connection on the client PC. Open "my computer" right click on each drive that you want to share left click "sharing" and settup drive sharing do this on both PCs. You may need to enable file and printer sharing for the second NIC in the host and the NIC in the client. Do not enable file and printer sharing for the first NIC in the host. You may need to run the internet connection wizard on the host and client choosing LAN.

I have CAT5 twisted pair with RJ45 connectors from the second NIC in the host to the NIC in the client. Is that different from a crossover cable? I'm not using a hub--would that make things easier or more difficult if I want to share files between the two?

Hi Major_Madness
Yes. A patch cable and a crossover cable are different. Head down to the store and pick up a crossover cable. Then check out these links. An hour later you should be in buisness. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thank you Steve! I went out and bought the crossover cable today after reading up on it on the net yesterday. The ICS link you posted is exactly what I was looking for! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Looks like what I have left to do should only take me 5 minutes once I replace a fried video card. I should have time to do that tonight after I work out and before I watch the Kings beat the Avs http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif Thanks for the help!

Using a hub is easier, and using a router like I do is more flexible as far as client set ups, and using one PC while the other is turned off.(no host PC the router is the host for both PCs)
