After having a defective hard drive replaced in my Packard Bell 955, my system freezes when using music cds.
After checking my 'system', I found an error..secondary IDE controller, dual fifo.
I've tried to remove all sound etc., in safe mode, and also reformatted hard drive with the restore disk that came with pc, with no luck.
I nosed around and found the name of the controller...ALI M5229 Bus Master IDE Controller.
Do I need an updated driver for this? If so, where do I get one?
Thanks~~

You should check the BIOS for the secondary IDE connector and make sure
that it is enabled.I noticed you are using the same BIOS that I'm using
(Acer Labs)so when you boot your machine hit the F1 key as soon as you hit the on switch.

I can't get in to the bios with the F1 key..I used F2, but didn't see anything about the secondary controller.
We had switched the CDrom cables, as someone had suggested, and also turned off the dma on the CD rom properties.
Anything else I can try? Thanks for helping!!

I have had this problem for a long time...only I didn't know it. I had called my brother who is a computer engineer because I was lagging on my online game. After trying many many solutions this is what worked for me. I found my orginal software and popped it in the floppy (old system). It is a Win95 driver but it worked. I installed it and the computer dectected new hardware and installed the correct driver (Win95) and my conflict was resolved. Now I am not stuck in the msdos compatible mode anymore. I had even gone into the registry and deleted the Noide entry, didn't do a thing. Try to reinstall your original driver that came with your system.
