Hello.
A friend of mine was given a P166 Compaq deskpro.I formatted the hard disk, and installed windows 95.Now I notice that it says my hard disk is running in ms-dos compatibility mode.Does anyone have any idea what this means, and how I can cure this?.The other problem is that this machine does not have a CD rom fitted.I temporarily installed one to install windows 95,but its been taken out now.Strange this was, that just after I had installed windows 95,I noticed the CD rom was no longer visible under my computer.I think these things are related.
If anyone can offer any advice,I'd be truly grateful.
Many thanks, and best wishes to everyone.

MS DOS Compatibility Mode is usually caused by protected mode drivers. Troubleshooting MS DOS Compatibility Mode (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q130/1/79.asp) from the Microsoft Knowledge Database might help.

I have had this problem for a long time...only I didn't know it. I had called my brother who is a computer engineer because I was lagging on my online game. After trying many many solutions this is what worked for me. I found my orginal software and popped it in the floppy (old system). It is a Win95 driver but it worked. I installed it and the computer dectected new hardware and installed the correct driver (Win95) and my conflict was resolved. Now I am not stuck in the msdos compatible mode anymore. I had even gone into the registry and deleted the Noide entry, didn't do a thing. Try to reinstall your original driver that came with your system.

This happened to my machine when I installed Win98, I had been using Win95. This problem was on my machine for a whole year lol...
