is it possible to restore changes made to the system further back than those provided by the scanreg program. I'm trying to restore settings from maybe two - three weeks ago. If this is a stupid question or extremely wishful thinking, please excuse my ignorance and naivete (I'm an amateur). But, if anyone has the answers post 'em. Thanks.
[Quick history: I used Norton Systemworks to make changes to my sys and now I really regret that I did this. Now having all kinds of freezing, rebooting, etc. IBM compatible Win 98 128 MB ram 350 mhz.]

Maybe...but it isn't as easy as using scanreg. Depends on what registry backups are available.
If you look in c:\windows you'll find the system.dat and user.dat files that comprise the registry. You'll also find other copies with different extensions. Things like .da0, .bak, .bad etc. check the dates those files were modified, pick two that have the same date and extension, and rename them in DOS.
First you have to rename the originals, I give them my initials for an extension. I'll use .xyz here for an example, and .old as the replacements. Use a space in place of the underscore ( _ ) I use here. Boot to a start up disk, and at the A:\> prompt:
ren_system.dat_system.xyz [Enter]
ren_user.dat_user.xyz [Enter]
ren_system.old_system.dat [Enter]
ren_user.old_user.dat [Enter]
ren is the DOS command for rename.
If you need to find out which ones are available in DOS, at the A:\> prompt:
dir_c:\windows\system.* [Enter]
The wildcard (*) tells DOS to list any files named system with all extensions.

Soon as I come up with all the answers...they change the questions!!
