Hello dekcitr,
Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!
In today's economy of the weird and strange the first question would be are you running any Anti Virus?
Have you attempted to reinstall your Sound Card drivers? I would suggest going into SAFE MODE and then Device Manager and Removing the Sound Card. Reboot and let Windows find and then reinstall the drivers...Updated if the latest and greatest are available.
While in Device Manager check under Properties for your CD and DVD and see if DMA support is enabled. First however, you might want to read the documentation on your DVD and see what it says regarding it's use or non use of DMA.
Oops, hang on with my suggestions until you let us know what OS you are running! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Definitely agree with the Whyzone on the above http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
Also, did the DVD ever have sound? If not, you want to look for a small cable (maybe 1/8th inch thick) that runs from the drive to the sound card.
Good luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Hello dekcitr
This could have been fixed in seconds if you had reacted quickly and it might not be too late.
The simple fix is to "Start>Shut Down>ReStart in MS-DOS mode" and when you get to the DOS prompt enter the command "scanreg_/restore" [the underscore should be a space].
[Any method of getting to a c: prompt will do because scanreg is in the c:\Windows\Command" folder]
This assumes, of course, that you have not just finished making software or hardware changes!
The problem has been caused by a "bad" configuration change.
It helps to be aware at all times of what your PC is doing in the background or beneath the surface.
If this "bad" configuration change was caused by some new programme being installed [with your knowledge & permission or without?], then when you go back to the previous configuration as determined by the backup copy of the Registry [+ some other files] the new programme would "be ignored" because there would be no settings in the Registry to make it work. But; the old programmes would all work just like they used to [if that nasty new prog has not moved them to new addresses, which it probably would not]
A safer solution is to keep a list of all the new software installed [and any hardware changes]and make backups at points along the way where the system is working to your satisfaction.
If you have any doubts about the problem being purely a "bad" configuration change, then instead of using "scanreg /restore";
re-format your Hard-Drive and restore the backup you like best.
Your list will show which prog's are included on which backup and you can select to include those you like.
I normally keep three.
One taken at an early stage
and two which "leap-frog" each other along the way as new software is installed.
I can, of course, jump back with ease to any of the three which will undo ANY [whew what a sweeping statement. I await being shot down in flames] software or configuration caused problem.
WHAT A JOY!
I now only need to worry about hardware problems!

Start playing a MP3 file than open the creative mixer and start un-muting sound channels starting with Wave/direct Sound/MP3 for wave and MP3 sound. Do the same for DVD but it is likely Line In or Auxiliary. Be sure you have both the analog(4 wire) and digital(2 wire) cables from the DVD drive to your sound card hooked up correctly. Some analog cables pass through the video card if this is your case the 4 wire cable goes from the DVD drive to the video card audio in than another 4 wire cable goes from the video card audio out to the sound card audio in or auxiliary if the CD-ROM is plugged into the audio in. To start the Mixer program if you have creative launcher running on the AudioHQ tab will be a mixer icon click on it. If it is not running go to start-->programs-->creative-->Dclick on creative mixer.
