I must be the most unlikely computer guy in the whole world...anyways...
I recently bought a new motherboard and an AMD Athlon 800 mhz...
the problem is when i install windows and it restarts and the bootup works fine up to the point where the windows splash screen shows...then after a while the screen goes to DOS and it displays the message, "Windows protection error. You must restart your computer now." I have tried reinstalling windows over and over and formating and repartitioning over and over to no avail. I also called the guy i bought the motherboard from and he said that the memory is bad and that i should try new memory. Can anyone help me or confirm this suggestion? I dont think it is the memory because i solved the same problem somehow on another computer of mine. Any help is appreciated...thank you.

Hey Nasic,

If IP Routing is enabled, you will get "protection" error messages. Windows 95 does not support IP Routing. You don't say which Windows you are using, so I am just guessing here. IP Routing should be disabled by messing with your registry and the system.ini file. Try the following URL for specific directions on how to disable IP Routing.

Troubleshooting Windows Protection Errors (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q149/9/62.asp) from the MSKB might help also.

alright...i've found out that the problem is a "VTD device initialization failure. Windows protection error. You must restart your computer now." What is a VTD device? Now I know that it is just a configuration error somewhere in my BIOS. Any suggestions?
