Hi everyone,
I fired up my backup computer thats running win98 and for some reason the serial port mouse doesn,t work. Win98 tells me to turn off the machine and check the mouse connector. I have tried a different 9-pin mouse and connector-cable to mainboard with the same results-the system boots into win98 and the mouse arrow just sits in the middle of the screen. Could there be a problem with the mainboard circuit(gee I hope not)? Maybe someone has a good troubleshooting procedure?
Thanks in advance.

Check the mouse connection again to make sure its connected to the mouse port properly. Boot your system with a windows boot up disk and follow the step by step confirmation and see if its loading the drivers properly.

Make sure your com ports are enabled and configured properly in the BIOS.
Try swapping the com1,com2 connectors on the mainboard. Perhaps com1 has ceased to function.

Thanks for the help everyone. I removed my cheap 33k modem and now the mouse is working. It was hard to check anything without a mouse-I have a boot diagnostic disk that told me both com ports had failed.

For future reference, you can navigate in Windows without a mouse.

[Ctrl] + [Esc] activates the Start button,
cursor or arrow keys move through the menu,
[Enter] activates the menu item you want,
[Tab] moves from one icon to the next,
[Enter] Activates the program or application associated with the icon (for instance, in Control Panel)
[Tab] also navigates through the options and buttons in Device Mannager, Arrow keys move from one device listing to the next.

Knowing how to use the keyboard, I can shut my computer down PROPERLY with the monitor turned OFF! Try it with your monitor on, you'll be glad to know how if your monitor ever dies...
