Two related questions - if emails have been deleted in Outlook Express and from the deleted folder, is it possible to rather inexpensively "recover" them and, under Windows98, if files have been deleted from the recycle bin, is it possible to inexpensively recover those files? Would any of the common utility programs allow one to do this?

Norton's system works has a utility to unerase the recycle bin but it is only effective (?) if it was installed prior to the deletion you're after. Plus it only goes back so far. I've not used it yet so I'm not sure of it's parameters and I'm unaware if it can help you in your e-mail.

Hi, constantine.
Outlook express message folders are actually files, with the messages stored sequentially. If you delete one, it is moved to the deleted items file. Now, deleteing it from there AFAIK only removes the marker to it, not the file itself. If the file has not been compacted, it should be possible to recover it. Haven't tried it myself, but I'll bet there are several programs that will do it.

I recently deleted about 20 mp3 files from my recycle bin in error. I already had Fixit Utilities loaded and used the undelete option. Not only did it recover all 20 files but told me of a whole stack of others I had deleted.
Two points though (sorry it sounds like closing the barn door material)
1) Any new files loaded or increased or moved could write over the deleted files and make them unrecoverable.
2) See 1) - You probably need to load the undelete software beforehand.
Fixit also worked increadibly well on Zip discs - just shows what is still there after deleting it. I would get Fixit - or Norton and load it just to be on the safe side.
Fixit also has a lot of other stuff including some really good registry tools that have been a lifesaver.
Good luck

I have used file fast undelete to recover some small files, you need to purchase it to recover larger files.
You should d/l the prog & install to a floppy (to prevent over writing files.
to recover just pop in the floppy and run.

I have no idea whether DBXtract (http://www.pcnet-online.com/dbxtract.htm) will recover "deleted" items from an uncompacted file or not but it can recover from corrupted files.
