i attempted to install an additional hard drive and although recognised the system would not boot up. i then removed all but i get invalid system disc strike any key when ready. but you've guessed it no disc in the a drive. i altered all of the bios no disc fitted disable errors etc even unplugging the a drive and trying a new proven one still no good. I would appreciate any help
system win 98 if it gets there 32 ram p100 chip the system it about 5 yrs old and this is the first major problem. can i solve it or is it as i suspect a defective motherboard

I don't get it Dave. Sounds to me like it's trying to boot off the hard disk. Have you put the right parameters in the BIOS for it?
Put the floppy back and put a system disk in it. Set to boot off A: in the BIOS.
If that doesn't help, post more specific info.

You say you installed an "additional" drive. Does the computer boot if only the original drive is connected?

I agree with Herbert, more specific information is needed.
