We have a network with were in a remote location we have one user he has an nt4 machine connecting to a cisco 2500 series router then the WAN. (no hub)
The problem is we think being caused by the user switching his machine off due to infrequent use.
The E0 port is being closed down, then the S0 then the S1 on the next router.
We think this is due to no traffic to the port once shut down, were pressuming it is because there is no hub.
Anyone other any soloutions (the CISCO 800 has a simple physical button HUB / NO HUB.
Many Thanks.

Hi
Just a couple of questions - do you know how this connection is configured?
It sounds like the router has been configured with Dial-on-Demand. If it is a low-usage circuit this would make sense. Otherwise, you are paying for bandwidth you are not using.
Can you identify what type of WAN circuit is being used? Is it an ISDN line or Frame or DDS? If ISDN or dial-up, then it suspect the line would be torn-down after an inactivity period.
Can you provide more details?
Thanks.
Fiona.

The line is on the serial point and is a BT kilostream which is a dedicated link.
Hope this info helps, I think its using PPP but will check.
Many Thanks

Do you have access to the router?
Can you confirm that you have had constant power supply? If you can view connect to the router, do a 'show log' command.
This should show you any interface status changes (up/down). Can you confirm the configuration of the serial port? I still suspect it's a DDR setup or similar.
Cheers.

I can get access to the router so ill take a look,
there has been power loss as this is the main culprit
ie. power goes , everything switches on, backup power kicks in, router comes alive but noone present to reboot wrkstn, main power comes back, wrkstn still down, period of time passes and i am assuming that the E0 port is closing down due to lack of traffic, if i shut the E0 down and reopen it it goes to admin down, then up then works.
With have a dedicated link
Many thanks for the help.

Hi Kev
If you can paste the e0 config here, I'll have a squizzy for you. But it does sound as if a power is an issue. However
Perhaps a UPS? Though most will only allow a 'kind' shutdown, or operational time of 10 minutes or so unless you're looking at some real bucks.
Cheers

Were going to look in to ups to see if a controlled shut down from a UPS as opposed to a straight power cut makes any diferenece.
Thanks a lot for your help but my work would kill me if i posted it, just proceedure sorry, but i appreciate all your time and help.
