Hi Everyone!

This is a great forum with a lot of knowledge flowing. I need some help in changing the com port that is automatically assigned to my modem whenever I install the driver. I have an Ambient 56K V90 modem and it keeps assigning Com 5 to the modem & my computer (Win 98SE) doesn't not recognize com 5 only 1 & 3. How can I change the port setting? Thanks & have a good day.

Are you sure it's assigning Com5 rather than IRQ5?

Would you Right Click My Computer, slide down to Properties, then Device Manger, Left Click on the (+) next to Modem and then Highlight the Modem, then click on Properties and report back what you see there?

Hi Patches.
I have had the same problem with this modem. The only answer I found was to physically remove the modem, uninstall the drivers, restore the registry, and then reinstall. I do not know why the software insisted on using com5 in the first place, but I suspect that there were ghost drivers in the registry. If you look in Control panel/system/device manager, what com ports are shown? If com 3 or 4 show up delete them in safe mode and reboot befor reinstalling the modem.

The reason that Com5 comes up as the default .
With PCI modems the O/S wants to set it up as a shared resource using the
Serial bus controller and or Simple Comm controller. Built onto the Pci card

These by default will most often be assigned port numbers above the standard com1-4
Because of the address given the card ,
You may be able to force the Bios to assign an Irq to the card.
It however will most likely not assign the normal com address .
In few bios you have the option to assign the Modem and IRQ of your choice or by the system.

I have found this works about 1/3 of the time and Only after disabling both onboard serial ports.
During the modem installation .
It is also an absolute must that you tell the bios to reassign or Allow “Reset of Configuration”

Hi Again!

I solved the problem! I went and removed the modem from a different computer (Rockwell 56K Speakerphone) installed it and the computer recognized it right away and assigned the right com Port #3. I put the Ambient in the other computer & downloaded a different driver & load it and it did compe up with the Ham Control box and in there I could change the com port setting from 5 to 3. It's working OK in the other computer. Thanks for your help & advice. You're great! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
