Hi, can anyone help me?????
Thought I`d have a go at building my own PC, all went well till I switched on for the first time. All I get is a black screen and a beep every every 3 seconds or so (a continous beep). All LED`s work. The on/off switch (on the front of the case) turns the system on but will not switch it off. I`ve made sure everything is seated on the Motherboard firmly, Checked graphics card - it`s okay. Did think maybe the board was shorting out cause I`m using metal risers and screws but this won`t happen according to the store where I bought the Motherboard from! Jumpers and Dip switches have been checked and double checked and seem okay.
I`m using a Gigabyte GA-5AX M/Board with a AMD K6-2 (500 MHz)chip, I`ve installed 64MB PC100 SDRAM in bank 0. The Graphics Card is a PCI card, temporary card till I get a decent AGP one.
I did power up before I added memory and graphics card, still got black screen and beebs...could I have damaged M/Board by doing this? Or maybe the board was faulty when I bought it? Any Ideas from all you experts out there...
Steve

Just a thought about the jumper settings: Being a new mobo with that processor have you checked the voltage settings? Also, does the power supply adequately support the system? I've heard some grumbling about the power requirements of AMD processors. Memorize the beep error codes and check Pete's site http://www.geocities.com/paleopete/ and Eric's too http://www.webenet.net/~ntuser this may help define the problem(s).

Regarding bassvax(Jerry)'s reply, I have exactly the same mainboard and CPU as you on one of my machines, and there are certainly no power supply problems. However, there are two AMD K6-2 500MHz CPU's, believe it or not. Mine has a core voltage of 2.2V and the other has a core voltage of 2.4V and requires a different jumper setting. Second point: regarding the facia Power switch - I would like to try this to be sure, but then I would lose my message - I believe it is normal for it not to switch the power OFF during POST (or at any other time?): I usually have to use the switch on the back panel.

Hi All, Thanks for all your replies to my problems, pleased to say that I`ve got it sorted now. In case there`s anyone else out there having the same hassle here`s what happened.
Firstly, I managed to find out on the net that the continous beebing indicates a memory problem, as most of you said. So I took the Ram back to the supplier, fitted the new one and problem solved...IT WORKS. Just goes to prove that because something is new dosn`t mean it`s good!!
Also took your advice regarding on/off switch... Just have to hold switch in for about 4 seconds and the pc powers off (must be a safe-guard against switching off accidently).
Thanks again
Steve
