networking through 2 modems

how can i network my 2 computer through each own modem? (cable) they have seperate ip's. modems are hooked to computers by usb's need step by step if possible kinda new to networking. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Are the computers in the same house? What type of modems? What are wanting to accomplish by doing this (example: transfer files, gaming, sharing internet access, etc)?
