Hi everybody.

I’m Charlie, from Norwich, England, and, as you can tell from my username, I have a limited imagination.

I must admit to feeling a little out of my depth in this company, my own experience of computers being limited to a short-lived dalliance with a Sinclair ZX81 & Spectrum in the early 80s (I did learn some BASIC programming – but with only 15k of memory, secured with sellotape, it was truly basic). Since then, due to family commitments/lack of cash/etc., I have been restricted to an Amstrad PCW for word-processing and some confused dabbling with CP/M.

However, I finally have a 700mhz/PIII that I am determined to try to understand. In my ignorance, I had assumed that a modern PC would look after itself (yes, I can hear you chuckle) - until those dreaded Illegal Operation/Fatal Exception error messages (those guys at Microsoft sure like to over dramatize things) began to convince me that I was actually going to have to work a bit harder. That’s why I was so glad to come across this site – which has the best ‘vibe’ (I know that word’s no longer in circulation, but it fits) of any I’ve visited. Many thanks to Charles, the founding father of this virtual community, for putting in all the work to set the site up – and to all you PCmeisters for the time you put into sorting out other people’s problems. Given my own ineptitude – and the fact that most computer manuals strike me as about as straightforward as a Palm Beach ballot paper - I figure it is my job to keep the rest of you employed for a while! After all, if we all knew what we were doing what would you do with your spare time? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

P.S.: Stonedragon: any tips on good (but cheap) music composition software?

charlie:Welcome to the forum! And thanks for the compliments, from all of us.

Music software...I'm a musician, been one for 40 years, and don't know a thing about music composition software, but have tinkered with someone's copy of Cakewalk a time or 3. It's pretty good, but don't know what it costs. Check around on some of the download sites like Tucows or download.com, shareware.com and you may be able to find trial versions.

I'm not a megalomaniac - I didn't intend to have a topic all about myself! This should have been posted with the Introductions. I got confused... be patient!

Anyway, that introductions section is getting awfully l-o-o-o-n-g. All that scrolling down was making me dizzy. Could this topic be renamed Introductions Part II?

When I tried to install Windows ME, it won't install due to Noton Boot Lock error. Aany idea how to uninstall this? I lost my diskette to unlock this.

Thanks,
Robert

nikobaby1, charlie,

welcome both to the forums. I myself have been away for awhile but was in this area of cyberspace, so decided to park my browser & moonwalk on over to give u guys this info re Win Me. I posted this on these Forums awhile back but it is such an old posting that u probably didn’t come across it.

WINDOWS ME DEMANDS APP UPGRADES Antivirus and security software may need an update to run on Windows Millennium Edition. http://www.pcworld.com/pcwtoday/article/0,1510,18556,00.html

Paleo Pete,

still have an email to get back to u on. Sorry about that. But things have been hectic here in the lower hemisphere of the planet to say the least. About to post under “Buying and Upgrading Advice” that I could use your input on. Hope to catch u there.

nickobaby1: Try posting your question in the Operating System Troubleshooting forum, that's where it belongs. I can't move it without moving the entire topic, so I'll let it stay. Later I may delete it, but for now it can stay until you know, and get it into the right place.

Thanks.

Zeus: ya ol' upside down maniac, good to have ya back. Don't worry about the email, it'll get done someday...

Post those links in the PC World forum, maybe some folks will find them of interest.
