Some food for thought;

Did you ever notice that your chance of experiancing a modem discontect is inveresely proportional to the importance of what you are are doing at the time? If you are downloading a multi-megabyte file from a server that doesn't support resuming broken downloads then just glancing away from the screen will get you disconnected but if you are sitting at a page comparing memory prices and have to run off and go to the restroom, feed the kids lunch and change the transmission in your car (whatever) you'll still be connected when you return!

I'm sure that those of you out there with DSL and other broadband connections don't have these kinds of problems; just us poor slobs with dial-up service.

Also it's called Plug-and-Play (and play and play.....) NOT Plug-and-Use?

And if your computer is behaving perfectly, not a single hiccup, anyone else (mostly businesses) you talk to that day will be experiancing "minor systems related problems... so please call back some other time"!

Whenever you have something important to do and you just need to QUICKLY check your e-mail or the weather your computer "decides" to lose the MBR or "Booting into safe-mode...." or something else that requires more time than you can spare to fix at that moment.

Three solutions I've come up with... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

A resurrected 486 with Linux installed. This machine acts as a router and handles all Internet traffic (on 28.8 dialup). It does exactly what it's told to do, and keeps doing it. Current uptime: 48 days.

NT4 for a desktop workstation, networked to the Linux box (and a couple other machines). IMHO, vastly superior to Win 95/98/ME. Current setup was installed 23 months ago and hasn't given a minute's headache.

A UPS so that both machines will shutdown gracefully when the power goes out. The one I have is a dumb cheapo (no smart interface). When the power goes out the Linux machine signals the NT box and everyone is happy.

Speaking of Murphy's Law.

You should never play leapfrog with a Unicorn.

Never eat prunes when you are famished.

Blame the other guy. Oh wait, that's one of mine. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Ha Ha Pete. That's a good one.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Celibacy is not hereditary.

Never sleep with anyone crazier than yourself.

If everything seems to be going well, you obviously don't know what the hell is going on.

Anything you try to fix will take longer and cost more than you thought.

If you fool around with a thing for very long, you will screw it up.

Never argue with a fool, people might not know the difference.

Cheers! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I say old chaps, you all must have had a lot of problems with plug n play to complain about it so much. I have never had any problem with any component that was pnp. I must be missing out. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Well if you're the religious type then it must be as Pete says plug and pray and your state of grace or machine must have been built by a very righteous person. Because any time I try to add something new to my machine that is SUPPOSED to be plug and play it requires playing with to get it to play.
