I was looking for (hopefully a little warranty help) on the HP site and I came across these posts:

Subject:Cognac motherboard works with the Intel Celeron processor.

Hi ******,
Thank you for posting to the HP Community Forum. We apologize for the difficulty upgrading the Pavilion with the Cognac motherboard. This motherboard is designed to work with the Intel Celeron processor. This motherboard will not work with the Pentium III processor or the Celeron 700 MHz processor. If a new motherboard is installed, then the original HP recovery CD will no longer function. The recovery CD is designed to work with the factory installed motherboard only. A retail copy of Windows would need to be purchased to install a new copy of Windows on the computer with a new motherboard. HP does sell just the computer separately from the printer and monitor. Check with any computer retailer that sells the Pavilion for further information. Have a nice week.

Subject:Maximum processor speeds

Hello *******,
Thank you for posting to the HP Community Forum. We apologize for any confusion this has caused you. First, we would like to point out that the Cognac motherboard is designed to run the Intel Celeron processor and is tested out at the maximum speed of 533 MHz. This is the maximum TESTED speed by HP.

However, we would like you to know the motherboard will handle higher speeds such as 566, 600, 633, 667, 700, 733, and 766. Therefore, the maximum speed the motherboard will handle is the Intel Celeron 766 MHz.

We hope this clears up any confusion between what the maximum speed the motherboard will handle and what the maximum TESTED speed is by HP.

Please post back if you have any other questions. Have a great week

No wonder?????

Ask for that information on the IBM bulletin board and see the answer. "IBM will only support your computer in the original configuration. Thank you for using the IBM Bulletin Board."

But if you go to the documentation and look up the criteria for upgrading to a faster processor the info is there but you have to correlate it to the processors you want to install.

Yeah, it just seemed a liitle odd to me that over a month they would do a 180 on just what could be done to that mobo. There were more and no two techs could agree on what the maximum processor speed could be!
