Hi,

i am having trouble setting up my Internet at home. I have just joined in with Telstra Bigpond account.

I know that i have set everything correctly. Cause i am a IT person myself,

I keep on getting messages such as "No dialtone. please makse sure modem is connected correctly." I have made sure that the modem is in correctly and that but i still get this.

What does it mean by this message???

I have also gotton messages such as computer is not answering????

I know that my account works cause i have logged on it at work. . .
Please help me here>>

Thanks,
MArk.

Seems to me that either you have a bum modem or you have a port conflict. What settings are you showing for your external serial ports and for your modem? COM, I/O, IRQ

THANKS,
I have put my modem connection into COM1 on the computer. I have made sure that this is selected in the connection settings.

It shouldn't be a bum modem as its a new SwanSmart modem.

I'll recheck the I/O and IQ settings again. to make sure there is no conflicts!!!

I have a Network card and that setup on my machine. Could there be a conflict from the Network Card and Modem settings?? ifso would it be best just to remove the network card, then!!!

Thanks,

Try checking the phone line connected to the modem maybe its bad.

I was getting a message like Modem not connected. It was just a bad extension for the phone line I had connected to my modem. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

If your modem dialer is working (I assume if you are an IT guy you already have gone into Control Panel/Modems and checked to see if modem passes diagnostic test)the other thing you didnt mention is if you have made sure you have a regular "Dial up Adapter" in your Network settings. The "Networking" adapter associated with the NIC wont work with a regular analog dial up.

By the way......."NO Dial Tone" usually means a bad dialer on the modem if EVERYTHING is hooked up right....even new modems crap out.

Can you get a dial tone if you plug a telephone into the line?

Is the modem from off-shore? Do you have the right connector (RJ-11, BT, etc.) When I was overseas in NZ, you could plug an RJ-11 into a BT, but the pinout was different.

Can you crank up the volume on your modem and listen?

You may need to adjust the S registers on the modem.
For instance the S7 register controls how long the modem will wait for an "answer" from the modem it's connecting to. The S6 register controls how long the modem will wait for dial tone before dialing out. Here's what I would try. First check for dail tone by connecting a phone to the second "jack" on the modem. Then use Hyperterminal to connect to the modem and issue this command:

ATZ

This will restore the modem to it's factory defaults. Now issue this command to test:

ATDTxxxxxxx (where xxxxxxx = the number your trying to connect to.)

If your still having a problem issue these commands:

ATS7 = x (where x= any number between 1-255 seconds)
ATS6 = x (where x = any number between 2-255 seconds)

You can increase the time the modem waits for dial tone and "carrier" by playing with these settings. Remember you can always restore the defaults by typing:

ATZ

Opps I made a mistake the correct command to reset the modem to factory defaults is:

AT&F

The command to reset a modem is:

ATZ
