DVD players

Forgive me for this post. I wasn't quite sure if it even belinged here, but I thought I'd give it a try. Does anyone know what types of files DVD players can read? Are all players the same? Can they only read mpeg2 files, or are there others they should be able to?

DVD-Video is a application format of MPEG 2 and the DVD-ROM specs.
DVD-VIDEO can only use MPEG 1 or MPEG 2 digital streams.

The DVD-ROM phyiscal format allows a DVD disk to hold other types of files. Of course these other file types wouldn't be playable in a DVD player but should be viewable using another software video player.
