I want to know how to differ between EDO and FPM physically ?
How can we say that a ram is EDO or FPM just by seeing it. Are there any special signs ??

Thanks

Hey Rex,

That's a darn good question. I just bought two 16meg EDO chips for my computer. The label clearly states that it is EDO ram.

I run SiSoft Sandra software on a regular basis, just so I know what's what. After I installed the chips, one report from Sandra stated that my third and fourth bank contained FPM ram, but another report stated that the ram is EDO. Go figure.

Not sure of any identifying characteristics or numbers that would signal FPM or EDO ram. Would like to find out though as much as you would.

Hopefully, someone with more expertise will answer. Looking forward to it.

Cheers,

Yeah... I think it's the most confusing part of memory world BB 66....

In my case, I want to flash / upgrade my SCSI RAID BIOS which use 32 MB 72 pin SIMM RAM, but I don't know if it;s EDO or FPM memory stick. The manual said that if I select false option (e.g. EDO RAM set to FPM) It will override the BIOS and damage it.

The problem is... the memory is not the one that came with the RAID card, while I have to upgrade it since the old BIOS doesn't support W2K...

So, I demand to know ... if my 72 pin RAM is EDO or FPM ......
Uhh .. I think it's tough tho' .....

BB66, any problems so far with the memory ..... like : hang, stop processing or other things ??

ANYONE CAN HELP ME PLEASE .... TELL ME HOW TO DIFFER EDO AND FPM PHYSICALLY....

YOUR EXPLANATION AND HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED....

Hey Rex,

Sounds like you have a bit of a problem. Hope somebody can help. I suggest hollering at Paleo Pete or Charles, the guy who made this forum. Both are knowledgeable, although a lot of guys on here are. I suggest changing your message icon to reflect the really mad red dude's face. lol

Nope, have had no problems with my EDO, or maybe it's FPM, memory. Only problem is, if it is indeed FPM memory, my system will use its speed instead of the true EDO memory speed. I guess the mobo always uses the slowest memory, in case there are mixed speeds in the 'puter.

It's a moot point though, since my mobo will support SDRAM. I plan to upgrade to that in the near future.

I have been watching this post, in hopes somebody would have a definitive answer for you and me as well.

Cheers

I don't know of any way to tell, other than looking at the box it came in...

Sometimes you can try the memory in a test board, and boot to the second screen, with the rectangular window showing system info, and use the [Pause] key to hold that screen. Often it will tell you which type of memory is installed.

Otherwise, if you know what company made the memory their website might have an identification section. Kingston has one, I don't know about any others.

Soon as I come up with all the answers...they change the questions!!
