Hey gang,

Music has always been a huge part of my life. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't take the time to listen to, or play some music. I was just curious as to what everyone else listens to in here, or if music plays any kind of role in your life. No offense, but people who 'just listen to the radio, and that's all' don't count. The radio is cool if it's all you have in your car, but you have to have some kind of collection of CD's, MP3's, LP's, reel-to-reel's, 8-tracks...you get the point.

I listen to pretty much everything and anything. My main tastes lay within the metal/alternative/rock genres. I would take up far too much space if I was to list all of my favorite groups/artists in here. To make it easier, I'll list my top 10 favorite albums. {It's funny, albums are pretty much obsolete and yet I still call CD's 'albums'} http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

(these are in no particular order either)

1. Alice in Chains- Dirt
2. The Tea Party- Anything by them...they rule!
3. Faith No More- Angeldust
4. Death- Pretty much anything by them, but I am partial to Spiritual Healing
5. REM- Up
6. Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon...or Wish You Were Here
7. Neil Young- Unplugged
8. Obituary- Cause of Death
9. Cynic- Focus (nobody has heard of these guys...but they are amazing)
10. Steve Vai- Passion and Warfare

Like I said, I could name a helluva lot more bands than 10. It's hard for me to pick 10 and leave so many out...but these 10 are a good indication of my tastes.

So open up, speak your mind! Cheer out your faves! Even if they are N'Sync, MC Hammer, or Micheal Bolton...ahem...let it be known that you are a music lover! Let it be known here who strikes a chord within you...I know, bad joke.

OK, I'll bite...been a musician since I was 5, play guitar, bass, sax, a bit of drums, keyboards, mandolin, and picked up everything in the band room in high school and learned how to play it. Only exceptions were oboe and bassoon, the reeds were too expensive. ($7.50 or so in 1970) Played everything else. Still play guitar on a regular basis, and sax occasionally, keyboards when I'm around one, which is not often. Been in over a dozen bands, made a living playing on the street in Austin and onstage for about 5 years.

Mainly a classic rock nut, like blues a bit too, and jazz, played sax in the high school jazz band. Hate country, it was shoved down my throat as a kid, don't even consider rap to be music...DISCO STILL SUCKS!

Likes? Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, Van Wilks, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Dire Straits, John Hiatt, Pink Floyd, early Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Kansas, Pink Floyd, Jeff Beck, Doobie Bros, Allman Bros, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Eric Johnson, Travelling Wilburys, Rush, Deep Purple, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Sammy Hagar...did I mention Pink Floyd???

Pete,

You should give one band that I forgot to mention a little listen. They have been compared to as a modern day Rush/Yes. They are Dream Theater. Their music can get a little busy sometimes, and I find sitting down to listen to a whole CD by them can be similar to sitting down to a huge Christmas dinner--it's nice, but you wouldn't want to do it everyday.

I take it you like Floyd too? My older brother (he's 36) got me into Floyd when I was 9 or so. I remember being the only one in class that had a Pink Floyd t-shirt and I wore it with pride! It was a black shirt with the marching hammers on it and the "Pink Floyd, The Wall" logo on the back. I have heard every album by them (except maybe some of the newer stuff...I just can't listen to them without Waters).

I've been playing guitar for about 13 years. I am mostly self-taught, but I did take lessons for about 6 months. I hated to quit because my teacher was amazing and very cool. I just didn't have the discipline to study and learn everything he asked me. I was in one band (death metal) for about 3 years. We didn't do much but play the same 9 songs over and over and over again, drink beer, smoke some funny stuff and argue near the band's demise.

Anyhow, Kudos for the response Pete! You've definately got some good taste and musical talent to boot http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm almost entirely self-taught, took 2 guitar lessons at about age 12, they guy refused to pick up where I was and wanted to start from the beginning. "This is the E string, this is the A string.." I would say "Yeah, and these are D,G,B, and E," start into a song and tell him I alrady know how to play, I want to learn lead. He'd go back to "This is the E string..." so I quit and learned the rest myself, and am now considered one of the top 10 guitar players in the area...which is actually not saying a lot...not a lot of great talent around here...

When Roger Waters left Pink Floyd the band was in a shambles. David Gilmour wrote the majority of the band's better songs, and played about 3/4 of the bass parts, Waters had to learn them so he could do it onstage, and Gilmours' bass playing got Waters Bass Player of the Year awards several times. When Waters left, he had insulted Rick Wright and Nick Mason and belittled their playing ability until they barely had the confidence in themselves to play at all any more, Gilmour had to hire backup musicians to help out until they got their confidence back during the tour after "Momentary Lapse of Reason", which is one of Pink Floyd's very best recordings ever. Waters sued the band to keep them from using the name, and the band finally won after a long court battle, but they can't play Waters' songs any more. I don't miss Waters a bit, the band is still fabulous without him, maybe even better. Momentary Lapse of Reason probably...no definitely gets played twice as much as any other Pink Floyd album or CD around here. You should read the interview Gilmour did with Guitar Playrer (or maybe it was Musician...) magazine after they got back into the studio and on the road again...I was amazed at the crap that went on with Waters and the havoc he created just before leaving the group. And the childish manner in which he dealt with the other members of the band.

Your experience with the band you mentioned is very common. the most dedicated band I was ever in was the first one, a group of 8th graders...most of the rest have been more interested in the party than the music. Finding musicians who are willing to stay straight and work at it is like pulling hens' teeth. "Play now party later" is not what they want to hear, and most bands don't like me because I insist on doing it by that motto. Otherwise I'm gone...That's why I left the last 3 bands I was in. I like to party too, but after practice or performance, not during. And I've been known to light up just a couple of left-handed ones too. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I've known how to leave it at home for years though, and that's the best way to go...You don't learn anything when you're ripped...

I've heard of Dream Theater, but don't think I've heard them. I heard a song by a band called Panaeolus (spelling?) years ago that was a duplicate of Pink Floyd, but have never been able to find any CD's...I'd sure like to find some, and find out what happened to them, great band...

Well I guess not being a musician kind of puts me in a different "class" but I have done so much soundwork (sudio and live) that I've actually been in bands. My favorite "nightmare" is going to a concert and getting "drafted" to run the board. Actually happened once.... but that's another story.

Classic rock, some country, some jazz and classical. Rap IS NOT music and yes DISCO ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS will suck!! I will not even sit down to a board and record disco or anything to do with disco.

Alrighty then.

Pete: doesn't surprise me a bit that you have been 'left-handed' at times. I figured that out as soon as you said you liked Floyd. Floyd rocks, I'm tellin ya. IMHO, Dark Side of the Moon is the best album ever recorded. Has anyone listened to it while watching the Wizard? If so, what did you think about that?

I like some country, mostly Alan Jackson. He's alright in my book. Most of the groups that Pete listed are also in my collection. Also like classical that's been revved up a wee bit. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Just received a new CD for Christmas. It's called Beethoven's Last Night, by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I have been wearing it out here at work for the last week.

I agree with ya'll. I absolutely detest rap, but then, any Floyd fan would admit that.

Cheers,

I don't like rap much either. The only rap I have in my collection is the Beastie Boys. I like them because they don't rap about gangstas, drugs, women as objects...etc. They also play a lot of their own instruments too, the music isn't all samples and electronic gadgets. I just don't get any other rap but the Beasties are alright in my book.

mjc: I've seen sound men that were just as much musicians as the people onstage with guitars strapped across their shoulders. Had one with our band in south Louisiana, no way it could have been the same band without the guy. Made it sound just like listening to the albums, except that you could tell different people were playing it. Every note crystal clear...I loved it when I had the chance to run out on the dance floor during a long lead, and hear the PA system, instead of the amps...Very few sound men can make a band sound like that one did. Most at rock concerts I've been to don't come close. If I can't hear every note sitting 20 feet from the stage, the sound man needs to back up 20 and punt...most of the time I hear more bass roar than actual music...

Jethro Tull...that's an entirely different story, best onstage sound quality I've ever heard, every time.

One of the reasons I don't go to very many concerts is that I'm too critical of what the other sound guy is doing and can't enjoy the show.

I just can't understand why some guys think more bass equals better music.

But I just love what you can do with computers and music (playback, creation or using a computer as the brains to a recording setup)

The reason for that is the bass carries much better than higher frequencies. Anything below a certain wavelength will bounce off anything in its path. Bass frequencies are up to 50' or longer, and go through most objects. That's why the rapster down the street lets you hear nothing but the bass drum. Everythiong else stays in the car...

As you turn up the overall volume, the bass still carries just as well, and should be cut back a bit in reality, but the majority of sound men won't do it. Therefore you get mostly bass roar, and everything else is drowned out or absorbed by the people in front of you.

They also don't realize the sound is totally different at different locations, and the sound board is usually in the best location for sound quality. At other locations in the hall the listeners have to deal with echoes, higher frequency absorption, and clutter...not to mention audience noise...

Sorry...I can't let it go another day without mentioning how much a Floyd fan I am also. Pete, have you seen Live At Pompeii? It's got interviews with the gang while cutting DSOTMoon. I read that Musician (I believe or was it Guitar) magazine interview with Dave Gilmour. As much as I despise Water's leftist views I still keep up with his semi-solo act (I say that because he has to have hired-guns do his guitar work like Clapton on Pros & Cons Of Hitchhiking and Jeff Beck on Amused To Death [Andy Fairweather-Low also]). I splurged for the the newest Floyd release, In The Flesh, which I originally thought was just a re-hash of The Wall, but the concert recordngs are somewhat diff than The Wall studio release and of course I was still impressed. Nick Mason and Rick Wright have released some solo stuff, but I didn't really care for it. As for Roger "Syd" Barrett...what can be said. I have three of his releases of which Dave Gilmour helped out in the poduction and guitar playing. I like it in a sick, sorted way. Unbelievable, the resilience of the music of Floyd. My son tells me kids at school are knee-deep into Floyd. Got 'em all, I do (on tape that is) about 80% on CD. Gilmour lives with Hendrix, Clapton, Trower and the likes on the guitar list IMHO.
As far as the other music...being 36 myself I like to think I'm keeping up in the music world even though I will never let the 60's-70's travel far from my heart. A Tull fan as well. I like a lot of Modern Jazz Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, Spyro Gyra, Tom Scott and such.

bassvax: Yep, I've seen Live at Pompeii, loved it. Don't know how I missed your post until now, might have been one of those days I got disconnected and it didn't show up later as new...

I'm surprised at how many of the younger folks are into Pink Floyd too, didn't think that would happen...I wasn't impressed with Pros and COns of Hitchhiking or Waters' version of The Wall, the Pink Floyd original was much better I thought, and the movie is an old favorite.

I don't know much about Waters' "leftist views", but I was amazed when I read that interview, that someone who can't play bass well enough to get his parts ready in time for recording could go to such lengths to insult other much better musicians' abilities. I'd rather hear Gilmour play anyway...Even though I love to listen to people like Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eric Johnson (the BEST), Ted Nugent...I think Gilmour is right up there in the very top of the list of all time greatest guitar players. Lots of people can play fast, but very few can play tasteful, melodic guitar like Gilmour and Clapton, and do absolutely fantastic solos without even trying to play fast. I've tried it, one of the most difficult things I know of to do with a guitar is play slow, melodic leads...and I can play just about as fast as Ted Nugent, Angus Young, Van Wilks, Johnny Winter, Robin Trower, and many of the other pros. Forget Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen or Eddie Van Halen, I can't touch those guys, completely out of my league...but slow and melodic gives me fits...maybe that's why I'm bald... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Long live Jethro Tull! Think I'll pop in 'Roots to Branches' now...hmmm...maybe 'Crest of a Knave'... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Music is the inspiration of the soul...the heartbeat of life. I love music myself, as I get older I find that my tastes or changing...or rather growing...especially with the birth of Napster. I play guitar...or at least try too...self taught with a little help from my friend. I have been struggling at it for a few years now. The instrument that i have find easier to play is the flute...and more recently I have picked up the Irish tin whistle...which I absolutely adore. Groups that I like...egads...there are so many...I can't help but notice that Pink Floyd was mentioned several times...And well who can't love them. And Momentary Lapse of Reason is definelty at the top of the list. One of song I love of theirs (Really old) is Julia Dream, I forget from what album, but it is really pretty. I grew up with classical music...so of course I still love that...rock and roll...Niel Young...Rolling Stones...INXS, U2...and countless others. I would have to say...that my favorite genre these days however, is celtic...irish music. I adore it. One group I discovered on Napster is THe Medieval Babes. They are fabulous. Very earthy and seductive. You guys I am sure would love them. They are group of about 12 pretty women from england, who have taken ancient poems from all over the world and put music to them. So none of it is in English...but it is truly great. On the guitar, I recently learned to play Canon In D, which took me forever to learn, but I eventually got it...very proud of myself. I keep wondering though, when the guitar will feel natural to me...if it ever will. I hear other people play and it just sounds so free to them...I gotta let myself go...Anyway that's my opinion...

I'm 25 and I never liked RAP or HIP HOP. Yuck! Now I am waiting for a great Rock revival to kill off all the bubble gum crap out there. Please God!
Good Listening...
The Beatles, The Doors, Led Zep, Cream(or anything with Clapton), The Who, Rush(awesome live band), U2, Depeche Mode, The Cure, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins(probably my fav.), Foo Fighters, Garbage, Radiohead(OK Computer is a classic), VH(only Sammy, Dave sucked), Pearl Jam, STP, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay(new and good), Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Oasis.

PS- Let the hair bands die, the 80's are over!

Rush(awesome live band)

You can say that again...Saw Rush open for Blue Oyster Cult just after Rush released 2112, halfway through the BOC show half the audience had left- Rush, the newcomer band, made BOC look like amateurs. By the way, they played 2 or 3 tunes, Geddy Lee stepped up to the mic and said they had just released a new album, 2112, "this is side one". And they played the entire 1st side of 2112 note for note...one of the best shows I've ever seen, Jethro Tull being without a doubt ALWAYS the best...

The "Roots to Branches" show was in an old opera house in San Antonio, best sound quality I've ever heard, even for Tull, and Ian Anderson had to do the show in a wheel chair, he took a fall onstage in Lima, Peru 2 weeks earlier and was confined to a wheel chair for the rest of the tour. We thought it was a stage prop at first, but it was the real thing. He still did an outstanding show...

I saw Rush on the Roll The Bones tour, the Counterparts tour, and twice on the Test For Echo tour. They played all seven parts of 2112 live, and I was floored. Theses guys just get better with age. They are probably the tightest live band I have seen. I hear they are coming out with a new album this year. Sweet!

You left out Johnny Winter, Jeff Healy, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Duane Allman, Dicky Betts, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, (yeah, I know, rock players but both are blues masters too), Billy Gibbons, David Gilmour (check out Paul Rogers' Tribute to Muddy Waters) and last but not least, Robin Trower...and I'm sure I could come up with more if I took a bit of time to check around...

By the way, check out one of my all time favorites, Van Wilks (http://www.vanwilks.com/) One of the best rock/blues guitar players in Texas, the guitar he's using to play slide in the "Click here for new pics and live video" link was given to him by Billy Gibbons years ago, it has his name inlaid in the neck. I took the bottom 4 pictures in the Gallery at various places around Austin, TX. The Dobro is a 1929 National. Sweet axe, it's also on the cover of Soul of A Man...the Strat is a 1957, sounds great live, and he knows how to get more controlled feedback from it than most people ever dreamed of. He won't let anyone play his guitars, his hands don't sweat, so if you sweat on his guitar neck his hand sticks there and he can't play it. He wouldn't even let me change a string when one broke in mid-set. And he knows I play and can handle guitars well. Koko's Hideaway and Soul of A Man are both excellent, but you can't have my autographed copies, have to buy your own. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif One great guitar player, highly recommended. Saw him with Eric Johnson one night, playing together, all I can say is WOW!!! Eric also plays on one cut on Koko's Hideaway. Fabulous tune too.

What is it with Texas and the blues? Startin' back in the 20's you had Lemon Jefferson and kept on keepin' on with Blind Willie Johnson, Mance Lipscomb, Tex Alexander, po' Lightnin', T-Bone Walker and then birthed Freddie King, Albert Collins and the Vaughan boys! Man!? What is it about Texas?

What's in your cd player?

Uh-oh. The player in the car? Or the one in the living room? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm all over the place...

Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Carmina Burana (Carl Orff), Zep, Old VH, Godsmack, Tribal Tech, Victor Wooten, Doobie Brothers, Fiona Apple, Vai, Satch, Selected DLR stuff, Aerosmith, ZZ Top (Billy is NASTY!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ), Terrible Ted (Dbl Live Gonzo is the best Live album ever produced.), Foghat Live, Christina Aguilera, Rufus (Anybody remember them?), P-Funk, RHCP... The list goes on and on... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Recently, my musical tastes have changed. The world of R'n'R is in terrible shape. There is a big void right now and everyone seems to be holding their breath, anxiously awaiting something inovative and interesting.

For the most part, I tend to gravitate towards aggressive/percussive music for my listening pleasure... However, the music I write goes from classical guitar stuff to Pop songs that my wife and daughter like sing to... R&B stuff, etc. But My favorite to play is definitely HEAVY Blues based stuff, ala Zakk Wylde.

Been playing guitar for over 20 years now... Classical guitar major for two years. All I can say is... My playing doesn't demonstrate the number of years that I've been playing. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Although the vocalist in my last band said some nice things to a drummer who was auditioning for the band. He said, "Cory? Umm... He sounds like Ted Nugent meets Billy Gibbons meets Paul Gilbert meets Steve Vai meets Eric Johnson and... Uh... Eric Clapton. Well, Maybe not Eric, but Eric on Steroids." LOL What a nice guy. I've never been as good as ANY of those players. LOL

Hey Howdy,

I can't play any musical instruments. I tried in vain when I was a kid to pick up on the guitar. I even took lessons, but for some reason it never 'took' with me. I can play a few chords and the Red River Valley, but that's my limit. hehe

HOWEVER, I can play a stereo mighty fine. Watch out when I hit the EQ button! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
